Hellenistic collection : Philitas, Alexander of Aetolia, Hermesianax, Euphorion, Parthenius by J. L Lightfoot( Book )

9 editions published in 2009 in English and Greek, Ancient and held by 571 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume presents a selection of Hellenistic prose and poetry, ranging chronologically from Philitas of Cos through Alexander of Aetolia and Hermesianax of Colophon to Euphorion of Chalcis and Parthenius of Nicaea, whose mythography Sufferings in Love is the major work in the collection. Knowledge of many of these texts has been increased by papyrological discoveries in the last century, yet few of them have appeared in English translation before now. Taken together, these works represent the geographic and stylistic range of a rich and inventive period in Classical literature."--Jacket
Daphnis & Chloe by Longus( Book )

12 editions published between 1916 and 1989 in 4 languages and held by 402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

LONGUS (whose very name is uncertain) is known to us only by his novel Daphnis and Chloe. He seems to have been a pagan sophist who lived about A.D. 200, possibly a Greek freedman in a Roman household. This romance recounts the adventures of two foundlings, brought up together by shepherds, from their infancy to their marriage. Unlike most examples of the genre, Daphnis and Chloe is concerned less with improbable incident than with the development of the main characters and their initiation into the secrets of human love. PARTHENIUS of Nicea in Bithynia, a Greek poet, was brought to Rome in 73 B.C. as a prisoner of war. After his release he settled in Italy and worked as a poet and teacher. Virgil was one of his pupils. Parthenius's poetry, mainly elegiac, is lost, and his only extant work is Erotica Pathemata, an anthology of prose summaries of love-stories from Greek literature, collected apparently for the use of Roman poets

Daphnis and Chloe by Longus( Book )

31 editions published between 1916 and 2005 in English and Greek, Ancient and held by 188 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Longus's ravishing Daphnis and Chloe (second or early third century CE), one of the great works of world literature, an innocent boy and girl gradually discover their sexuality in an idealized pastoral environment. In Xenophon's Anthia and Habrocomes (first century CE), perhaps the earliest novel and a new addition to the Loeb Classical Library, a newlywed couple, separated by mischance, survive hair-raising adventures and desperate escapes as they traverse the Mediterranean and the Near East en route to a joyful reunion. The pairing of these two novels well illustrates both the basic conventions of the genre and its creative range. -- jacket

Parthenius of Nicaea : the poetical fragments and the Erōtika pathēmata by Parthenius( Book )

14 editions published in 1999 in 3 languages and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is the first study of all the extant remains of the important Hellenistic poet and mythographer, Parthenius of Nicaea, reputed to have been Virgil's tutor in Greek and a major literary figure in his own right. A new edition of his poetic fragments, this book presents the first commentary on Parthenius since the work of August Meineke (1843); it also attempts to contextualize his work within the traditions of Hellenistic poetry and within the 'neoteric revolution' of late Republican Rome. The prime importance of the work is that it aims to be a comprehensive treatment of a relatively neglected and marginalized figure; and that it sets Parthenius' poetry and prose side by side to illustrate and contextualize a literary personality who was unusual in antiquity as an accomplished writer in both genres."--Jacket
