"You'll find the selected content for this issue of Thresholds is intended to play and complicate the disruptive event rather than appropriate its shock value. Our contributors sort through the aftermath of architecture, art, and cultural scandals, provoking consideration not just of splashy headlines--outrageous one moment and then gone the next--but also our collective reactions and their implications."

Simultaneous decoding of reach target and eye position in premotor areas by Nathan Yellin-Mor( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Current brain machine interface (BMI) systems are limited in their ability to extract information from physiological signals. To this end, the primary goal of this project is to investigate decoding multiple variables from neural activity in the medial intraparietal sulcus (MIP) and dorsal premotor cortex (PMd). Decoding multiple variables potentially increases useful extracted information for a BMI system. Neurons in these premotor areas are thought to compute the planning of arm movements, and previous studies have successfully inferred ongoing reach plans from their activity. Because the same brain areas are also sensitive to eye position, we investigated the possibility of simultaneously decoding reach target and eye position from a single set of neurons in MIP and PMd. Data was recorded using multiple electrode arrays while monkeys performed a task coupling delayed reaches with eye movements. For target decoding we used a Naïve Bayes classifier with Poisson distribution modelling and for eye trajectory decoding we used a discrete Kalman filter. We found that individual neurons in both areas encoded reach and eye variables simultaneously. We successfully decoded reach target and eye position from a population of neurons throughout the memory period. We also demonstrated eye trajectory decoding during the memory period of pursuit trials. Furthermore, we showed that a reach decoding strategy that models eye position effects performs better than strategies that do not. To our knowledge, our results are the first to successfully decode reach plans even while the eyes are being moved. Finally, we demonstrated that it is possible to simultaneously decode multiple variables pertinent to a BMI system from a single population of neurons." --
