Pococke's tour in Ireland in 1752 by Richard Pococke( Book )

4 editions published between 1891 and 2007 in English and held by 25 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1752 Dr Richard Pococke, later bishop of Ossory (1756-65) and Meath (1765) undertook a remarkable and extensive circuit of Ireland in the course of 100 days. Setting off northwards from Dublin, Pocke travelled through twenty counties, recording the sights in detail in his diary. The diary remained unpublished until 1891, when it first appeared in print. Pococke's tour is a very important source for anybody interested in Irish society in the eighteenth century for two reasons. In the first instance, it is extremely detailed, providing a balance account of his experiences during his extraordinary tour. Secondly, it provides descriptive accounts of parts of the country, which rarely appear in eighteenth-century accounts, including remote parts of west Donegal and west Mayo. Researchers interested in travel writing and in social history will find this an extremely readable and useful account of eighteenth-century Ireland
