The journal of a tour to Corsica; and memoirs of Pascal Paoli by James Boswell( Book )

2 editions published in 1768 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This first complete reprint of James Boswell's book on Corsica since the eighteenth century is enhanced by comprehensive annotation, textual apparatus, and a critical introduction. Boswell designed his text in two parts, first, an "Account" of Corsica, which gives a historical, political, socioeconomic, and cultural overview of the Corsican people, and second, the "Journal" of his tour to see the Corsican leader Pascal Paoli in 1765. This edition, unlike so many reprints of just the "Journal," allows the reader to appreciate Boswell's original design." "The young and adventuresome Boswell wanted to write a book that would swing public opinion, and perhaps the British government, to support the Corsicans in their struggle for independence. He was well aware that his English readers had but the haziest ideas about Corsica, gleaned from just snatches of news in the papers. The first part would therefore provide the context within which to understand and appreciate his account of his journey to and meeting with Paoli." "The complete text also illustrates aspects of Boswell that have received less attention than they might, namely, his sense of history, his political enthusiasm for national liberty, and his scholarship."--Jacket

A short introduction to moral philosophy, in three books; containing the elements of ethicks and the law of nature by Francis Hutcheson( Book )

3 editions published between 1764 and 1772 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The celebrated division of philosophy among the ancients was into the rational or logical, the natural and the moral. Their moral philosophy contained these parts, ethicks taken more strictly, teaching the nature of virtue and regulating the internal dispositions; and the knowledge of the law of nature. This latter contained: 1. the doctrine of private rights, or the laws obtaining in natural liberty; 2. Oeconomicks, or the laws and rights of the several members of a family; and 3. Politicks, shewing the various plans of civil government, and the rights of fates with respect to each other. The following books contain the elements of these several branches of moral philosophy; which if they are carefully studied may give the youth an easier access to the well known and admired works either of the ancients, Plato, Aristotle, Xenophon, Cicero; or of the moderns, Grotius, Cumberland, Puffendorf, Harrington and others, upon this branch of philosophy"--Book. A system of moral philosophy, in three books by Francis Hutcheson( Book )

1 edition published in 1755 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Often described as the father of the Scottish Enlightenment, Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) was born in the north of Ireland to an Ulster-Scottish Presbyterian family. Organised into three 'books' that were divided between two volumes, A System of Moral Philosophy was his most comprehensive work. It synthesised ideas that he had formulated as a minister and as the Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow (1729-46). Published posthumously by his son in 1755, prefaced by an account of his life, it is the only treatise by Hutcheson for which a manuscript is known to have survived. Asserting that individual natural rights derive from an innate understanding of moral behaviour, Hutcheson offers a model that mediates between individual interests and communal ideals. Containing Book 1 and part of Book 2, Volume 1 describes the role and perception of 'perfect' and 'imperfect' natural rights
