JEAN-CLAUDE TOUBON AND KHELIFA MESSAMAH This article inspired by a wider scope research on "La Goutte d'Or", a section of the 18th arrondissement of Paris - considered to be a "ghetto" and thus now in the process of being remodeled - brings to light only several of the many different aspects multi-ethnic co-habitation. First of all, the non-understanding and uneasiness which exist between the different ethnic groups are reflected by demographic factors, social and residential mobility than in the clashes of values. These elements are more or less revealed by the different behaviours "in the street" a well as in the community residential space. The authors, secondly, consider the different ways and means negociating conflicts and the reasons which contribute to a peaceful coexistence in this geographic space. Paradoxically, this coexistence is based on two processes which are diametrically opposite : an overall "break-down" of this section of the city into social micro-areas (fragmentation) and a reconstruction of the area with a given identity meaning the necessity of a strict code of conduct. Thus, how does the "culturel hardening", which is noted as well, help or hinder this type of multi-ethnic co-habitation ? How does it influence the individual "interest" of living together ?
