Jules Verne's Twenty thousand leagues under the sea : the definitive unabridged edition based on the original French texts by Jules Verne( Book )

79 editions published between 1866 and 2019 in 8 languages and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

52 editions published between 1862 and 2018 in French and German and held by 141 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Five weeks in a balloon : a voyage of exploration and discovery in Central Africa by Jules Verne( )

5 editions published between 1870 and 1890 in English and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jules Verne's "Five Weeks in a Balloon" is a satire of the myriad books on African travel contemporary with its publication - although so far as the landscape, inhabitants, animals, and features of the countries are described, it is completely accurate. An abundantly amusing and interesting tale, this is a book that will entertain a wide range of readers, and one that would make for a worthy addition to any bookshelf
The world before the deluge by Louis Figuier( Book )

18 editions published between 1863 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Louis Figuier (1819{u2013}94) was destined to remain in academia until disagreements with fellow scholars led him to abandon this path and instead pursue 'the idea that scientific knowledge, which until then had been almost exclusively the property of the learned, should be put within the reach of the reading public'. Published in 1863, La Terre avant le déluge became a classic of popular science and introduced palaeontology to a wider readership; that this English translation appeared only two years later is an indication of its impact. Figuier wrote that his aim was 'to trace the progressive steps by which the earth has reached its present state {u2026} and to describe the various convulsions and transformations through which it has successively passed'. The book was also celebrated for its inclusion of more than 200 illustrations by a pupil of Doré, Édouard Riou (1833{u2013}1900), who became famous as Jules Verne's illustrator a few years later
