Chateaubriand on kirjallisuuden historian jättiläinen, jonka vaikutukset ulottuvat Victor Hugohon ja Gustave Flaubertiin asti. Hän ehti elää niin pakolaisena kuin poliitikkonakin, mutta jälkipolvet muistavat hänet - paitsi gastronomisista harrastuksistaan - ennen kaikkea romanttisen intohimoisista kirjallisista töistään.
