Brahms komponierte seine letzte Sinfonie in den Sommermonaten der Jahre 1884 und 1885 und hob sie auch selbst mit dem Hoforchester des Herzogs von Meiningen aus der Taufe. Brahms' Meisterschaft über die klassische Form kommt besonders im Finalsatz zum Ausdruck. Hier liegt der Musik eine alte Variationsform zugrunde, eine Passacaglia, deren Tonfolge mehr als 30-mal hintereinander wiederholt wird, jeweils in anderen Instrumenten versteckt. Diese Konstruktion der Partitur wird bei Bernard Haitink und dem London Symphony Orchestra deutlich herausgearbeitet. Mit der vorliegenden Aufnahme der 4.
