A book of bills of lading, listing goods shipped by the firm Reynell & Coates (1775-1776) and then by Josiah and Samuel Coates (1783-1785), all merchants of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Each bill of lading includes the name of the vessel, the ship's master, a description of the goods being shipped (for example: 30 barrels of flour, one ton of bar iron), the place and the name of the person to whom the goods are being shipped, and the date. Mostly, various kinds of flour (common, superfine, middling) and iron (bar, nail rods, plow share, cart tire) were being shipped. However, a wide variety of other goods are also listed: beer, food items, candles, lumber, earthenware, a marble tombstone, pitch, lignum vitae, cotton, iron doors, tobacco and snuff, spices and chocolate, molasses, woolen cloth, paper, soap, and copper stills are also listed. Shipments were made to Newburyport, Marblehead, and Boston, Massachusetts; the West Indies and the Bahamas; Portsmouth, New England (i.e. New Hampshire); Lisbon; New York; Providence and Newport, Rhode Island; and Alexandria, Virginia. Newbury or Newburyport was the most common destination
