On the 20th anniversary of the first lunar landing mission, Apollo 11, President Bush outlined a program that would put the United States on an aggressive track to return to the Moon to stay, and to land humans on Mars. The president's space policy calls for expanding human presence an activity beyond Earth orbit into the Solar System; obtaining scientific, technological and economic benefits for the American people; encouraging private sector participation in space; improving the quality of life on the Earth; strengthening national security; and promoting international cooperation in space. The Space Exploration Initiative accomplishes these goals. In August 1989, NASA began an extensive review to summarize the technology and strategies for going back to the Moon and on to Mars. To obtain the final objective, major topical activities were defined. These activities were incremental capabilities to be achieved to fulfill the national space vision. They include: (1) moon waypoints (lunar exploration; preparation for mars; habitation; lunar based observation; fuels; energy to earth); (2) asteroids waypoints; and (3) mars waypoints. The six national space vision are (1) to increase our knowledge of solar system and beyond; (2) to rejuvenate interest in Science and engineering; (3) to refocus the US position in world leadership (from military to economic and scientific); (4) to develop technology with terrestrial application; (5) to facilitate further space exploration and commercialization; and, (6) to boost the US economy

The aim of this Research Topic for Frontiers in Psychology under the section of Cognitive Science and Frontiers in Neurorobotics is to present state-of-the-art research, whether theoretical, empirical, or computational investigations, on open-ended development driven by intrinsic motivations. The topic will address questions such as: How do motivations drive learning? How are complex skills built up from a foundation of simpler competencies? What are the neural and computational bases for intrinsically motivated learning? What is the contribution of intrinsic motivations to wider cognition? Autonomous development and lifelong open-ended learning are hallmarks of intelligence. Higher mammals, and especially humans, engage in activities that do not appear to directly serve the goals of survival, reproduction, or material advantage. Rather, a large part of their activity is intrinsically motivated - behavior driven by curiosity, play, interest in novel stimuli and surprising events, autonomous goal-setting, and the pleasure of acquiring new competencies. This allows the cumulative acquisition of knowledge and skills that can later be used to accomplish fitness-enhancing goals. Intrinsic motivations continue during adulthood, and in humans artistic creativity, scientific discovery, and subjective well-being owe much to them. The study of intrinsically motivated behavior has a long history in psychological and ethological research, which is now being reinvigorated by perspectives from neuroscience, artificial intelligence and computer science. For example, recent neuroscientific research is discovering how neuromodulators like dopamine and noradrenaline relate not only to extrinsic rewards but also to novel and surprising events, how brain areas such as the superior colliculus and the hippocampus are involved in the perception and processing of events, novel stimuli, and novel associations of stimuli, and how violations of predictions and expectations influence learning and motivation. Computational approaches are characterizing the space of possible reinforcement learning algorithms and their augmentation by intrinsic reinforcements of different kinds. Research in robotics and machine learning is yielding systems with increasing autonomy and capacity for self-improvement: artificial systems with motivations that are similar to those of real organisms and support prolonged autonomous learning. Computational research on intrinsic motivation is being complemented by, and closely interacting with, research that aims to build hierarchical architectures capable of acquiring, storing, and exploiting the knowledge and skills acquired through intrinsically motivated learning. Now is an important moment in the study of intrinsically motivated open-ended development, requiring contributions and integration across a large number of fields within the cognitive sciences. This Research Topic aims to contribute to this effort by welcoming papers carried out with ethological, psychological, neuroscientific and computational approaches, as well as research that cuts across disciplines and approaches

C-141A Pitot-Static System Calibration Tests( Book )

The flight test program consisted of six C-141A/T-38A pacer flights. On flight 2, a series of tower fly-by points were also accomplished. Prior to each flight a ground calibration of the aircraft's pitot-static systems was performed (Appendix B). Each of the six pacer flights consisted of 30,000 and 20,000 feet (MSL), cruise configuration and 10,000 feet (MSL) takeoff and landing configuration points. On flight 5, adverse weather conditions prohibited flight operations at 10,000 feet. T-33A performance evaluation by William G Schweikhard( Book )

The T-33A is a tandem two place single engine turbojet powered aircraft which is used as a basic trainer and as a combat readiness trainer throughout the Air Force. Indications were that performance data as presented in the Flight Manual was not accurate. Aircraft engines in service presumably suffered thrust deterioration as a result of many years of service. Thus the purpose of this test was to evaluate the performance of a representative T-33A aircraft with an average thrust engine and to determine the cuase for the variation in performance between aircraft. Test results show a 10 percent variation in installed thrust which could cause even larger percentage variations in take-off and climb performance. The cruise and endurance performance in relatively unaffected by the thrust variations and engine life. The greatest cause of thrust variation is not attributed to the deterioration of the engine with service life, but rather, to the broad thrust limits allowed after overhaul of the engine and to variations of trim rpm in flight
