In 1799, Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland set out to determine whether the Orinoco River connected with the Amazon. But what started as a trip to investigate a relatively minor geographical controversy became the basis of a five-year exploration throughout South America, Mexico, and Cuba. The discoveries amassed by von Humboldt and Bonpland were staggering, and much of today's knowledge of tropical zoology, botany, geography, and geology can be traced back to von Humboldt's numerous records of these expeditions. One of these accounts, Views of the Cordi
Political essay on the island of Cuba by Alexander von Humboldt( Book )

7 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 218 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Humboldt's most controversial book, Political Essay on the Island of Cuba was banned, censored, and willfully mistranslated to suppress Humboldt's strong antislavery sentiments. It reemerges here, newly translated from the original two-volume French edition, to introduce a new generation of readers to Humboldt's astonishing multiplicity of scientific and philosophical perspectives. In their critical introduction, Vera M. Kutzinski and Ottmar Ette emphasize Humboldt's rare ability to combine scientific rigor with a global consciousness and a deeply felt philosophical humanism. The result is a work on Cuba of historical import that will attract historians of science as well as cultural historians, political scientists, and literary scholars. --Book Jacket

Kosmos by Alexander von Humboldt( Book )

14 editions published between 2004 and 2014 in German and held by 81 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Polymath Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), a self-described 'scientific traveller', was one of the most respected scientists of his time. Humboldt's wanderlust led him across Europe and to South America, Mexico, the U.S., and Russia, and his voyages and observations resulted in the discovery of many species previously unknown to Europeans. Originating as lectures delivered in Berlin and Paris (1827-1828), his multi-volume Cosmos: Sketch of a Physical Description of the Universe (1845-1860) represented the culmination of his lifelong interest in understanding the physical world. As Humboldt writes, 'I ever desired to discern physical phenomena in their widest mutual connection, and to comprehend Nature as a whole, animated and moved by inward forces.' Volume 1 (1846) investigates celestial and terrestrial phenomena, from nebulae to the temperature of the earth, as well as 'organic life'. Throughout, he stresses the method of, and limits to, describing the universe's physical nature

Wissensformen und Wissensnormen des ZusammenLebens : Literatur - Kultur - Geschichte - Medien by Ottmar Ette( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in German and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The purpose of the essays collected in this volume is to advance the discussion about "life knowledge" (Lebenswissen) and to point the way toward new horizons for current and future thinking and action in literary and cultural studies. This broad research field encompasses a wide range of elements: European, non-European, philological, and philosophical approaches; perspectives native to media history, narrative theory, and the aesthetics of literature; as well as transcultural and transdisciplinary methods. Clearly, "life knowledge" is a field of research whose forms and norms of knowledge remain to be more precisely elucidated. This volume is dedicated to meeting this intellectual challenge
TransArea : eine literarische Globalisierungsgeschichte by Ottmar Ette( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in German and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume takes the view that globalization is not a recent phenomenon, but instead an enduring process, marked by four periods of accelerated change. The Early Modern period in European historiography is linked to our present experience of globalization by way of the diverse global trends that took place during the Age of Modernity. The literatures of the world provide a visceral understanding of what can only be understood from the perspectives of multiple logics- namely, the life of our planet and its inhabitants. The wisdom of literature cannot be replaced by any other kind of knowledge
