The predicted rheology for the sub-continental mantle does not account for both the weak mantle strength beneath deforming regions and processes of lithosphere-scale strain localization. In order to better constrain this rheology, we used structural geology, tectonics and numerical modeling through the study of the Ronda peridotites. The structural study of these peridotites shows that their deformations were formed beneath a back-arc continental rift, before they were inserted into the internal Betics at the early Miocene. Just below the extending crust, a ductile strain gradient occurs in response to a process that implies the dominance of the dryGBS creep during dynamic olivine grain size reduction. Numerical quantifications demonstrate that this ductile process can trigger large strain localization and a drop of strength for the highly deformed peridotites at low temperature (< 800 °C). At larger scale, the results of a 2-D numerical model show also that such a weakening process promotes high strain localization in the sub-continental mantle, which leads to trigger continental necking. This strain localization provokes consistently an important drop of strength in the sub-continental mantle, as observed beneath deforming regions. Based on this "localizing" rheology, our results allow us to propose a new definition of the mantle rheology that accounts for the evolution of the mantle strength during the deformation of the lithosphere

The business of building stones represents an important economic activity worldwide. International exchanges potentially favour substitutions, sometimes fraudulent, between stones with comparable facies from various provenances. It thus becomes important to develop a certification tool for the commercial building stones. This study develops different methods (petrography, geochemistry and/or magnetism) to identify some granitic ( "Silverstar from Tarn", "pink from La Clarté", "gray blue from Louvigné" and "blue from Lanhélin") and sedimentary (Comblanchien limestone) building stones in order to certify their geographical provenance. It unequivocally individualizes these French targeted building stones with respect to potential commercial competitors. Our analysis also uses statistical tools to account for the intrinsic variability of the studied rocks, to quantify the dissimilarity between rocks from different provenances or, when necessary, to establish the similarity. A preliminary issue was to define the spatial scale at which a given building stone can be considered as homogeneous. Samples from different quarries are compared. Our results and the general approach illustrated are not only of interest for professionals but to anyone using the building stones for industrial applications. The study shows that a detailed characterization of building stones may provide a robust tool for discriminating between building stones from different provenances, and thus open the possibility to attach to a given stone a fingerprint, an identity card, and if required a commercial label

Nombre d'orogènes anciens, impliquant la convergence de lithosphères juvéniles, présentent des caractéristiques difficiles à interpréter en terme de tectonique compressive entre des plaques résistantes, en particulier : (1) un métamorphisme homogène de HT-BP, (2) la juxtaposition limitée d'unités avec un métamorphisme contrasté, (3) des domaines marqués par des foliations peu pentées et des linéations d'étirement à fort angle de la direction de convergence, (4) des zones de cisaillement sub-verticales transpressives avec un étirement très plongeant. Une étude de terrain dans deux orogènes Paléoprotérozoïques (Finlande), combinée avec des modèles analogiques montrent que la compression de lithosphères molles favorise un épaississement homogène, du fluage latéral et un étalement gravitaire. La délocalisation de la déformation pendant le raccourcissement est cohérente avec l'existence de reliefs distribués ainsi que l'exhumation des roches de haut-grade contrôlée par l'érosion

In late Mesozoic times, Eastern Asia was affected by a large-scale extensional event that extended from Transbaikalia to the NW to northeastern China to the SE. However, before this work, extensional deformation of the eastern Mongolian basement was not documented. Thus the aim of this study was to describe the modes of extension that marked eastern Mongolia. Through structural analyses of three representative regions at the scale of eastern Mongolia, we show that extension is marked by exhumation of a metamorphic core complex, emplacement of syn-thinning granite intrusions, and development of a horst and graben system. Numerous geochronological data (obtained from U-Pb on zircons, U-Th-Pb on monazites and xenotimes, and 40Ar/39Ar on micas and amphiboles) constrain the exhumation of the metamorphic core complex and the emplacement of the granite intrusions between ca. 138 Ma and 125 Ma. This time range appears similar to that generally attributed for the deposition of syn-rifts series within overlying basins and to those available for exhumation of metamorphic core complexes in the adjacent regions. We further propose that extension resulted from a major change in kinematic of the paleo-Pacific domains around 140-135 triggering the horizontal spreading of the abnormally hot eastern Asian continental lithosphere. Finally, on the basis of field observations and geochronological arguments, we suggest that extension might have favoured the onset of transfers of uranium-rich fluids from the basement to the overlying basins
