Christopher Pratt : six decades by Tom Smart( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 109 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christopher Pratt is one of Canada's most prominent painters and printmakers. His reputation was solidified with the celebrated retrospective of his work at the National Gallery of Canada in 2005. The intense realism of Christopher Pratt's art is, at first glance, deceptively simple. But behind the recognizable images lie deeper meanings. Pratt's search for a reality that is magical and mysterious gives his work its uncanny and haunting qualities. Since the day in the mid-1950s when Pratt first saw the painting Early Sunday Morning by the renowned American realist, Edward Hopper, he has perfected his ability to represent the qualities of natural and artificial light. Pratt stands in the line of other great Canadian artists, including Alex Colville, Lawren P. Harris, Jean Paul Lemieux and Lionel LeMoine Fitzgerald, all of whom influenced him and the way he represents the land. Others who figured in his development include Americans Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Thomas Eakins. The unique and beautiful island of Newfoundland, with its culture, history, geography and weather, has also influenced his work. This handsomely designed book, published in association with the Art Gallery of Sudbury, traces Pratt's development as a painter and printmaker from his early watercolors through to the iconic paintings of his mature years. It features more than 100 works, all beautifully reproduced, many of which have never been published before."--Publisher's description

2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This retrospective Canadian artist Tom Forrestall traces the story of the development of his art from the time he entered Mount Allison University in the late 1950s up to the present. Forming part of a coterie of "magical realist" east-coast painters that includes Alex Colville, Christopher Pratt, and Mary Pratt, this volume presents the range, depth, and poetry of Forrestall's work. It explores the development of his characteristic "magic realist" style and the genesis of his shaped paintings; the use of the egg tempera technique, its origins, limitations, and unique properties; the choice of subject matter and its relationship to defining a poetry of place; the artist's spirituality as expressed directly and symbolically in the imagery; the relationship of sketchbooks and personal written reflections to the paintings; and the place of his art in relationship to analogous contemporary movements in Canada, the United States, and Europe."--BOOK JACKET

Pictographs : the graphic art of James Simon Mishibinijima by James Mishibinijima( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 64 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Transcending the familiar iconography of the Near North--the crows, the wolves, the loons and the ravens--the drawings of James Simon Mishibinijima propel readers into a fantastical spirit world, one that is as powerful and mysterious as it is beautiful. Mishibinijima's drawings are a reflection of the surface landscape of his native Wikwemikong First Nation on a peninsula at the eastern end of Manitoulin Island--the immediate geography of forest and rock, but also the ancestral wisdom of the Elders who have left telling images graven on stone on the north shore of Lake Superior and at the burial sites on LaCloche Island."--
