Man Ray by Man Ray( Book )

3 editions published in 2011 in English and Italian and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An exciting monograph dedicated to an extraordinary figure and one of last century's most famous and influential artists. Man Ray (1890-1976) was a photographer, painter, and creator of objects, experimental films, and images which were at times enigmatic. This catalog, which presents more than 200 works and compares and contrasts images with biographical details, is divided into three main sections: Man Ray's formative years spent between New York and an artists' colony in Ridgefield, New Jersey; the Paris period; and the period spent between Hollywood and Paris, France-the city he ultimately chose to adopt as his home. The publication describes the creation of some of his most famous pieces and the motifs-very often of females-that inspired the works. Man Ray's life was marked by a succession of love affairs with famous and intriguing women, and this catalog dedicates several sections to this topic. The book also deals with the themes permeating Man Ray's work throughout the years, such as his passion for chess, the relationship between reality and illusion, and experimental photography and film. Comparisons are also made with the works of some of the most important artists of the twentieth century, such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Constantin Brancusi, Jean Arp, and Francis Picabia

A window on the world : from Dürer to Mondrian and beyond : looking through the window of art from the Renaissance to today by Marco Franciolli( Book )

Giorgio Morandi by Giorgio Morandi( Book )

7 editions published in 2012 in Italian and held by 169 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Giorgio Morandi's visual lexicon consisted of the most minimal of props--bottles, vases, pitchers, boxes--but from these humble forms he extrapolated a marvelous and decidedly modern metaphysics of objecthood and space. Morandi reinvented the still life for modern times, without ever having directly incorporated modern content into his pictures: 'only we can know that a cup is a cup, that a tree is a tree,' he observed, concisely expressing the continued relevance of the still life in the twentieth century. Nothing could be clearer than a Morandi still life, with its mute tones of beige, grays and off-whites, and its glyphic quality of cluster surrounded by spaciousness, and yet few artists have achieved such a singular atmosphere of absolute enigma. In this respect, Morandi is of the school of Vermeer and Chardin, practicing a devotional art of tranquility and privacy--'moods which I have always valued above all else,' as he once told an interviewer--finding whole new worlds in simple permutations of ordinary objects. This handsomely produced volume offers a detailed examination of Morandi's paintings, watercolors, drawings and etchings. Alongside the still lives, it presents his landscapes, floral compositions and his well-known self-portrait, as well as various works by contemporary artists for whom Morandi has been a crucial precursor."--Amazon.com

Signac : reflections on water by Paul Signac( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 100 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Through a selection of over 140 works, this catalog offers a first approach to Paul Signac's color harmonies along with an invitation to travel. Paul Signac's career as a painter in love with color was just as intense as it was varied. Starting from one of the largest private collections of the artist's works, this publication illustrates his creative journey from his early impressionist paintings until his final watercolors from the Ports de France series, also including the heroic years of neo-impressionism, the splendor of Saint-Tropez, and the shimmering images of Venice, Rotterdam, and Constantinople. The virtuosity of the neo-impressionist master is also reflected in the diverse techniques he used: the ardor of Signac's impressionist debut is set off against the limpid polychromies of the divisionist paintings, the daring Japonisme of his watercolors contrasts with the freedom of the sheets painted en plein air, while his large Indian ink studies reveal the secrets of calm compositions, contemplated at length in his studio.

11 editions published in 2015 in Italian and English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

7 editions published in 2013 in French and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Balthasar Burkhard by Balthasar Burkhard( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents the many facets of photographer Balthasar Burkhard (1944-2010), showing his self-invention as an artist and tracing the trajectory of the medium of photography in the later half of the twentieth century. Burkhard's work combines a sensitive understanding of the body as sculpture and the photographic image as a canvas, making him one of the pioneers in translating photography as a monumental tableau into contemporary art. This comprehensive book coalesces Burkhard's early role as a chronicler of the contemporary art of his time, especially as the main photographer for Swiss curator Harald Szeemann, his conceptual redefinition of photography together with other artists, and finally his emancipation as a photo artist. It accompanies a major retrospective organized by Museum Folkwang in Essen, Fotomuseum Winterthur and Fotostiftung Schweiz, the Museo d'arte della Svizzerra italiana in Lugano and the Balthasar Burkhard Estate in Bern. Exhibition: Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (20.10.2017- 14.01.2018) / Fotomuseum Winterthur und Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, Switzerland (11.02. - 21.04.2018) / Museo d'arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano, Switzerland (09.06. - 02.09.2018)

Roberto Donetta Fotograf und Samenhändler aus dem Bleniotal by Roberto Donetta( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 45 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

0Exhibition: Fotostiftung Schweiz, Winterthur, Switzerland (28.05-04.09.2016)
