Memoirs of Georges (Grisha) Charpak, from his birth in Pripet, near Chernobyl, in 1924. His family emigrated to Palestine in 1926, returned to Sarny, Poland in 1928, and moved to Paris in 1931. He joined the communist party in April 1942 in the framework of the Front Patriotique des Jeunes. He escaped to Montpellier after the Vél d'Hiv roundup, where he lived under the pseudonym of Charpentier. Imprisoned there in 1943 and condemned by the Vichy tribunal to two years for anti-national activities, he continued his clandestine work for the Resistance until he was discovered. His mother (Hannah Szapiro) was imprisoned and sent to Gurs. He was transferred to the penitentiary at Eysses, and subsequently deported in June 1944 from Compiegne to Dachau, to the labor commando of Landsberg am Lech. In April 1945 he was transferred through Kaufering to the central camp at Dachau, then to Allach, where he was liberated by the U.S. Army. After returning to Paris, he studied physics and later worked in Geneva, where he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1992
