Trappers of New York : or a biography of Nicholas Stoner & Nathaniel Foster ; together with anecdotes of other celebrated hunters, and some account of Sir William Johnson, and his style of living by J. R Simms( Book )

2 editions published in 1871 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a complete, unexpurgated edition of Jeptha Simms' celebrated history of trapping and hunting in upstate New York during the latter part of the 18th and early part of the 19th century. First published in 1850, it went through five editions within the next 20 years and one 20th-century edition (expurgated) published in 1935. All editions sold out quickly and copies of the book have always been elusive in the out-of-print market. It is first and foremost the story of two of the most famous trappers pf New York, Nicholas Stoner and Nathaniel Foster, their lives in the woods, their trapping methods, their encounters with the Indians, and their lives in the Mohawk Valley. It is also the story of events of the American Revolution in which both trappers played their parts. And then there is one of the most remarkable account of the life of Sir William Johnson, with details based on personal reminiscences of his contemporaries. It is in this section that an earlier edition (1935) left out parts of Simms' original text which might have seemed offensive to readers of a bygone era, passages which have been restored to the present edition. An added feature, one of more practical significance, is the index to persons and subjects compiled especially for the limited edition of 1871 which formed the basis of the present reprint. Only 50 copies were printed of the edition which also featured added illustrations. Another addition is "The Stoner Pension Papers"." -- Publisher's description
