Contends that members of the Zionist youth movemenents in Eastern Europe, especially Hashomer Hatzair, were prepared for resistance in the Holocaust due to the rebellious nature of their ideology - their longing for a different life in another place. Describes the rescue activities of Hashomer Hatzair in Hungary, which functioned underground throughout the war years. From March 1944, when Germany occupied Hungary, Hashomer Hatzair focused on saving its members, providing them with "Aryan" papers and arranging escape routes, mainly to Romania. From October 1944 the organization was active in helping the Jewish community in Budapest, distributing ca. 100,000 letters of protection and providing for ca. 5,000 children in 32 homes. Many members of the organization were arrested; some were deported to Auschwitz. Hashomer Hatzair carried out rescue operations for those who were imprisoned, and sometimes also rescued non-Jews

A biography and historical study of the life and times of the author's mother, Chajka Klinger (1917-1958). Chs. 5-23 (pp. 52-402) describe her experiences in the Holocaust, based on her diaries which were written (in Polish) while she was in hiding in 1943-44 and on interviews with her friends and other survivors. Klinger was born to a hasidic family in Będzin, Poland. As a teenager, she joined the Zionist youth movement Hashomer Hatzair. During the war she became one of the leaders of the movement, which initially focused on education of the children and on the nearby hachsharah farm, where she lived. After the first deportations in 1942 and an extended visit by Mordechaj Anielewicz, a resistance group was formed, which often clashed with the Judenrat and its head, Mojżesz Merin. The remaining Jews in Będzin were interned in a smaller ghetto in early April 1943. After the Warsaw ghetto uprising, the resistance group in Będzin was encouraged by survivors from Warsaw and by leaders in the Yishuv to focus on rescue rather than resistance. During the final liquidation of the ghetto in June 1943, Klinger hid in a bunker, but was caught and tortured. She was then sent to clean up the ghetto, but managed to escape with some friends who went into hiding in nearby villages and later fled to Slovakia and then to Budapest. Klinger and some others received permits to emigrate to Eretz Israel, which they did in early March 1944. Emphasizes Klinger's sharp criticism of Zionist leaders, both in Europe and in the Yishuv, who did not help the Jews in Europe during the Holocaust
