I protagonisti di questo romanzo sono due paladini di Carlo Magno: il cavaliere inesistente, di nome Agilulfo (egli è di fatto una lucida armatura vuota) e un giovane inesperto e appassionato, Rambaldo. Quest'ultimo, arrivato al campo dei paladini all'inizio del romanzo, vuole vendicare la morte di suo padre, causata dall'argalif Isoarre; Agilulfo invece combatte per dovere, presumibilmente convinto della sua fede anche se questo punto non è mai chiaro nel romanzo, con un valore che è ammirato da tutti i paladini, ma anche con un senso notevole del dovere, della precisione nel controllare l'andamento delle mansioni degli altri e i propri compiti, per cui i commilitoni lo trovano tanto capace quanto antipatico
