The Oxford companion to architecture ( Book )
13 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 514 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
1,500 A-Z entries cover all aspects of architecture, from architects, building types, and movements and styles to materials, aspects of design, and definitions. The Companion offers complete coverage of architecture from around the world, giving equal weight to architecture in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America as to the more familiar examples from Western Europe and the United States, and of both modern and vernacular architecture. It covers all periods, from the beginnings of architecture in ancient Egypt to the present day, and yet is strongly rooted in an approach to architecture that looks at its social, technical, and practical aspects, beyond an art-historical perspective. --from publisher description

Style-architecture and building-art : transformations of architecture in the nineteenth century and its present condition by Hermann Muthesius ( Book )
6 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The education of the architect : historiography, urbanism, and the growth of architectural knowledge : essays presented to Stanford Anderson ( Book )
4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Whether historians or architects (and several have trained in both areas), the essayists all share the belief that contemporary concerns about architecture affect the way history is constructed. Because they view architecture as a body of knowledge evolving over time, they have resisted the wholesale espousal and rejection of modernism that has often polarized the examination and practice of architecture in the second half of this century
Aalto and America ( Book )
9 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Overview: The internationally renowned Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) created several landmarks of modern design in the United States. The first, the Finland Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1939, introduced his pioneering style to the country and established his reputation among his American peers. Subsequent designs produced in the United States marked major turning points in his evolving position as an architect. His commissioned project for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Baker House dormitory (completed 1949) features an undulating facade of red brick, a material that references the building's Boston surroundings. Aalto's fan-shaped plan for the Mount Angel Abbey Library (completed 1970) in St. Benedict, Oregon, his consummate exploration of the library type, capitalizes on the local terrain and the use of natural light. Aalto's designs had a lasting impact on American modernism, but his experiences in America also profoundly influenced his own stylistic development. Aalto and America is a detailed survey of this beneficial relationship, with contributions by fifteen international experts who explore these key designs in relation to larger themes in international politics, architectural culture, housing research, and modern criticism and design

Louis I. Kahn by Robert McCarter ( Book )
1 edition published in 1975 in Japanese and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Louis I. Kahn (1901-74) was one of the single greatest influences on world architecture in the second half of the twentieth century. This book provides a comprehensive critical overview of Kahn's architecture, examining his works chronologically and exploring key themes and their evolution throughout his career. Including both built and unbuilt projects, each of the architect's major buildings is analysed, beginning with the design process and ordering ideas, followed by the methods and materials of construction, and finally a 'walk-through' of the spaces themselves - recognizing that Kahn's primary concern was interior space and its experience. Each project is extensively illustrated with photographs that convey the spirit of Kahn's work and a concept development portfolio documents the inspirations and ideas that led to the finished design." "Robert McCarter's authoritative text explores how Louis I. Kahn redefined modern architecture. Featuring a selection of original drawings and photographs from the Louis I. Kahn Archives and newly redrawn plans, this book also includes selected writings by Kahn and the first publication of the complete chronology of Kahn's buildings and projects, compiled by William Whitaker, Chief Curator of the Louis I. Kahn Archives. This monograph is an indispensable reference work on this renowned architect."--BOOK JACKET
