Enron Corp goes back to 1985 with the merger of Houston Natural Gas and InterNorth of Omaha, Nebraska. Deregulation spurred competitive markets for wholesale and retail sales of natural gas. With large market demands, Enron grew quickly and became the largest supplier of natural gas in the United States. After the purchase of a power plant in the United Kingdom in 1989, Enron expanded its power infrastructure worldwide, and its assets grew enormously. In 1994, following deregulation of electric power two years earlier, Enron entered into the electric power market. While sales in gas doubled yearly, the electric power market tripled, providing Enron a billion dollar business. By 1999 shareholders had realized a 715% return on their investments. Fortune magazine acknowledged Enron as a top money maker in the 1990s
