Religion and social crisis in Japan : understanding Japanese society through the Aum affair( Book )

11 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the time that Aum Shinrikyo emerged, most Japanese assumed that they lived in one of the most well-ordered and safest societies, a model that had much to offer the chaotic Western world. Japanese were also accustomed to reading about violence elsewhere - related to the gun culture in the United States or ethnic and religious conflict in various regions of the world - but rarely at home. This assumption was shaken on 20 March 1995 when the deadly nerve gas sarin was released on the Tokyo subway system. Since that incident, the 'Aum affair' has had widespread repercussions and shaken the Japanese psyche in a serious way." "This volume provides a window onto contemporary Japanese society by considering the various reactions and responses to this crisis precipitated by the deviant religious movement. The 'Aum affair' also highlights the dilemma of how to protect society from potentially dangerous religious groups while at the same time protecting the free practice of religion, a concern of all democratic societies."--Jacket
