Obwohl Albinoni bis zum Tod seines Vaters in dessen Geschäft hauptberuflich Spielkarten produzierte und sich erst 1708 ganz der Musik zuwandte, gilt er doch neben Vivaldi und Corelli als der dritte große Konzertkomponist des italienischen Barock und als Pionier des Instrumentalkonzerts, dem die Schönheit der Melodie immer wichtiger war als effektvolle Virtuosität. Seine Konzerte wurden in ganz Europa gespielt und gedruckt; sogar Bach hat drei seiner Fugenthemen bei ihm abgeschrieben. Am bekanntesten sind seine Concerti op. 7 und op. 9. - Zum 250. Todestag des Komponisten (je nach Quellenlage im Jahr 2000 oder 2001) spielten Simon Standage und das Collegium Musicum 90 auf Originalinstrumenten seine Concerti a cinque op. 5 ein: "Wer aufmerksam zuhört, wird den unaufdringlichen Charme entdecken und merken, dass Albinonis Qualitäten unter der Oberfläche liegen" (Klassik heute 5/01).
