Report of the visit by Commodore Thomas ap C. Jones of the U.S. Navy to San Pedro harbor and to Los Angeles in January 1843. Jones met with Manuel Micheltorena, the Governor General, after the incident in October 1842 when Jones captured the Mexican garrison in Monterey. Jones believed that Mexico and the United States were engaged in hostilities. On learning that this belief was incorrect, Jones restored the Monterey garrison to the Mexican Monterey authorities
