1850, tombeau d'Honoré de Balzac by Stéphane Vachon( Book )

15 editions published between 2007 and 2013 in French and English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the shabby boarding house in the rue Neuve-Sainte-Geneviève, petty Madame Vauquer and her tenants wonder at the plight of the aging resident Goriot. Once a well-heeled merchant, Goriot was--at first--afforded special treatment from the Madame. But now something is clearly amiss in his financial affairs, and his increasingly tawdry appearance makes him a subject of ridicule in the household. Some think he lost in the markets, others see him as a lecherous patron of prostitutes, but one thing is clear: his selflessness and complete devotion to his two daughters

4 editions published in 1990 in French and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

BALZAC, IT IS WELL KNOWN, IS A WRITER WHO WANTS TO MAKE A WHOLE OF HIS WORK, IN A SORT OF "OBSESSION OF ADDING". COMBINATION, INSERTION OF NEW TEXTS IN OLD ONES AND MULTIPLE MODIFICATIONS ARE TYPICAL OF BALZAC'S TECHNICAL. THE CREATION AND THE PUBLICATION ARE OFTEN, IF NOT ALWAYS, CONDUCTED SIMULTANEOUSLY AND THERE IS ALMOST NO DISTANCE BETWEEN THE SUCCESSIVE STEPS OF HIS WRITING PROCESS. THE MEAN GOAL OF THIS STUDY IS TO INVESTIGATE, THROUGH A CHRONOLOGICAL PRESENTATION OF PROJECTS AND PUBLICATIONS, THE INTRICATE GENESIS PROBLELM OF BALZAC'S WORK RESULTING FROM THE AUTHOR'S METHOD. WE ARE MORE CONCERNED BY THE TEXTS HISTORY THAN BY THE TEXTS STUDY; IN THIS "EDITORIAL REGARD" WE WANT TO INCLUDE ALL THE WORKS, SUCCESSIVE FORMS OF PRINT (BOOKS AS WELL AS "FEUILLETONS") BUT UNFINISHED PROJECTS TOO. FROM THE RECIPROCAL ENLIGHTENING OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DOMAIN, PUBLISHED AND MISCARRIED WORKS, OCCUR THE ARCHITECTURAL METAPHOR, THE BALZAC'S WAY TO PUT SOME ORDER IN THE MISCELLANEOUS MASS OF HIS FICTIONNAL PRODUCTION. A BIBLIOMETRIC STUDY OF BALZAC'S PRODUCTION SHOW HOW HE RUNS HIS EDITORIAL PROJECTS, BUILT ON TEXTS ACCUMULATION AND MULTIPLE USES, AND PUBLICATION IN "OEUVRES COMPLETES" (OR SOME OTHER KIND OF COLLECTION). WE SEE, FINALLY, HOW THE CREATIVE PROCESS IS SUBJECT TO THE PUBLICATION CONDITIONS, EDITORIAL STRATEGIES AND ECONOMIC LAWSE, NEW CONTEXT FOR THE LITTERARY IN WHICH BALZAC RESOLUTELY CHOOSE TO EVOLVE
