Darlene Clark Hines interviews Helen Octavia Dickens, M.D. about her family history and her work in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Dickens attended the University of Illinois School of Medicine, the only African-American woman in her class. She spent 1933-1934 at Provident Hospital in Chicago. In 1945 she became the only African-American board-certified ob/gyn in Philadelphia when she joined Mercy Douglass Hospital. She later became a faculty and staff member at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Dickens discusses the history of her practice, her awards, her family, and her career
