Refutation of Sébastien Castellion's De haereticis an sint persequendi, which had been written in response to the execution by Calvinist authorities in Geneva of the Spanish humanist Michael Servetus, who was the first person executed for heresy by Protestants. Castellion had argued that heretics ought not to be punished; that if they were they should not be punished by a civil magistrate; and that in any case they should not be punished with death. Bèze responded that heretics are to be punished not because they are unbelievers but because they proclaim themselves to be faithful believers and yet persist in false doctrine; that civil magistrates are empowered to punish heresy in order to prevent corruption of the Church ensuring peace; and that death was an appropriate punishment for heresy in some cases
