"In 1920, the Australian Government was given a mandate by the League of Nations to prepare the peoples of New Guinea to step into the 20th Century. This short black and white film was intended to demonstrate how Australia was fulfilling its responsibilities. It shows how under the tutelage of the Government, villagers embraced literacy and were trained in modern methods of horticulture, agriculture, fishing, mining, and aviation in anticipation of self-government. It explores the previous indentured labour system and the promise of new and fair labour awards. The film also depicts the significant role played by New Guineans in support of Australia's fight against Japan during World War Two."--Container
