Der Erste Weltkrieg war in Zweigs literarischem Schaffen der zwanziger Jahre stets präsent. Die Kernzone der quälenden Erinnerung bildete die Schlacht um Verdun. 1927, nach dem erfolgreichen Roman "Der Streit um den Sergeanten Grischa", kündigte Zweig ein Buch mit dem Titel "Erziehung vor Verdun" und mit dem Protagonisten Bertin an. Die Grundidee war, den Schriftsteller Bertin eine tiefgreifende "Erziehung" durchmachen zu lassen. Um ihn herum schuf Zweig eine Reihe starker Figuren und dramatischer Begebenheiten, die die weitverzweigte Handlung und die Fülle der Episoden verflechten und vorantreiben. Noch in den dreißiger Jahren wurde der Roman in acht Sprachen übersetzt. Lesern in Deutschland, für die das Buch hauptsächlich gedacht war, blieb es bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg vorbehalten
