A mammal's notebook : collected writings of Erik Satie by Erik Satie( Book )

8 editions published between 1996 and 2017 in English and held by 387 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

His poignant, sly and witty writings embody all his contradictions. Included here are his "autobiographical" Memoirs of an Amnesic, and wryly comic musical commentaries; the gnomic annotations to his musical scores ("For the SHRIVELLED and the DIMWITS, I have written a suitably ponderous chorale ... a kind of austere, unfrivolous introduction ... I dedicate this chorale to those who do not like me."); the publications of his private church; his absurdist play Medusa's Snare; advertising copy for his local suburban newspaper, and the mysterious, elaborately calligraphed, "private advertisements" found stuffed behind his piano after his death

Adventures in 'pataphysics by Alfred Jarry( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a short and legendary life, Alfred Jarry (1873-1907) created a unique and large body of work that included plays, novels, poetry, journalism and other less definable speculations and texts. His writings form the essential bridge between the European avant-garde of the 1890s (Symbolism) and those of the Twentieth century (Futurism, Dada, Surrealism). In the last fifty years his influence has scarcely faltered, in particular his science of 'Pataphysics has informed the recent writings of Deleuze, Baudrillard and Eco, among many others. The College of 'Pataphysics, founded in Jarry's honour, has numbered among its members luminaries such as Cortazar, Duchamp, Ionesco, Leiris, Queneau and most of the other writers of the "Oulipo"." "Despite this influence he is still best known in English as the author of Ubu Roi; the aim of this three volume Collected Works is to make the totality of his major writings available in English for the first time." "This first volume presents his first two books, Black Minutes of Memorial Sand and Caesar-Antichrist, two apocalyptic Symbolist texts which already signal their self-destruction through the presence of Ubu." "A series of essays follows: aesthetic (Time in Art), philosophical (To Be and To Live), political (perhaps: Visions of the Present and Future), and concludes with his famous treatise on how to actually construct a time machine (convincing enough to be taken seriously by contemporary scientists). Jarry's own selection of his speculative journalism completes the volume. Book jacket."--BOOK JACKET

Anicet; ou, Le panorama by Aragon( Book )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 49 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Anicet" est le premier récit d'Aragon. Il a été commencé alors que l'auteur était encore au front, en 1918. Ses thèmes en sont le refus de la vie qu'une certaine époque et une certaine société proposaient, et la poétisation de certains éléments du monde contemporain : les livraisons de Nick Carter, les films de Pearl White, la série des Fantomas ... Les pages du "Passage du Cosmorama" préfigurent "Le Paysan de Paris". "Anicet" est avant tout fondé sur l'apprentissage du monde par l'amour
