Collection contains the papers of four generations of members of the Thornton, Skinner, and Greene families. The papers of Caroline (Homassel) Thornton of Rappahannock County, Va., include ten short diaries, 1842-1872, of religious meditations and an autobiography, ca. 1870. Thornton's son-in-law, Frederick Gustauvus Skinner of Maryland, was educated in France with the Marquis de Lafayette's grandchildren in the 1820s. The collection includes letters, mostly in French, from members of the Lafayette family to Skinner and his parents. There are also letters, 1870-1871, from Skinner to his wife concerning the sale of guns in Egypt. The correspondence, 1863-1865, of Skinner's son-in-law, Thomas Tileston Greene, contains letters to his wife written while serving in the Confederate States Army. Correspondence, 1909-1940, of his son, Frederick Stuart Greene, concerns his family's history and the Lafayette letters in this collection. The collection also contains a few papers of other family members
