The biology and technology of intelligent autonomous agents by Luc Steels( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 166 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book treats the problem of building intelligent autonomous agents. Biology is taken as a major source of inspiration. The book is based on an extraordinarily successful NATO Advanced Study Institute at which leading proponents of the new behavior-oriented approach to artificial intelligence met to establish a solid scientific foundation for the field of intelligent autonomous agents. The meeting was an extraordinary event because it featured not only very high quality lectures but also robot laboratories set up by the AI labs of the MIT and the University of Brussels. The book has three parts. Part 1 consists of papers based on lectures given at the institute, Part 2 of papers based on presentations made or experiments conducted at the institute, and Part 3 of shorter contributions
Arsenic and old mustard : chemical problems in the destruction of old arsenical and 'mustard' munitions by NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Chemical Problems Associated with Old Arsenical and "mustard" Munitions( Book )

3 editions published between 1998 and 2011 in English and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than ten million `poison gas' shells, mortar bombs, etc., lie hidden in Europe, many of them relics from World War I. Some were fired and failed to detonate, others were abandoned in old ammunition dumps. Most retain their load of chemical warfare (CW) agents. They are turned up daily in the course of farming and construction. Many European nations have permanent departments concerned with their collection and destruction. Old munitions, when discovered, are usually heavily corroded and difficult to identify. Is it a CW munition? Or an explosive? If CW, what agent does it contain? Once identified, one has to select a destruction method. Some of the methods that have been proposed are less than perfect, and are often complicated by the presence of extraneous chemicals, either mixed with the CW agents during manufacture or formed over decades in the ground. Of particular interest are the insiders' reports on the German CW programmes of both World Wars, and the current status of Russian chemical armaments
Strategic stability in the post-Cold War world and the future of nuclear disarmament by Melvin L Best( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The contributors to Strategic Stability in the Post-Cold War World and the Future of Nuclear Disarmament recognize that the collapse of the former Soviet Union has left a conceptual vacuum in the definition of a new world order. Never before have the components of world order all changed so rapidly, so deeply, or so globally. As Henry Kissinger points out, the emergence of a new world order will have to confront three fundamental questions: What are the basic units of the international order? What are their means of interacting? and What are the goals on behalf of which they interact? The main question is whether the establishment and maintenance of an international system will turn out to be a conscious design, or the outgrowth of a trial of strength. The concept of a planning framework that could shape or govern these interactions is emerging and may now be at hand. Capturing this emerging framework is the thrust of the present book, which seeks to reach a consensus on defining a model (calculus) for strategic stability in a changing, multipolar world in the presence of weapons of mass destruction - the model being the core of a conscious design to shape or govern the interactions of nation states in a new world order. The following taxonomy of the dimensions of strategic stability was accepted by the contributors as the first step towards such a model: Stability in geopolitics and balance of power; Arms race stability; Deterrence stability, crisis stability, first strike stability; Stability in the presence of clandestine proliferation. After four gruelling days, this unprecedented gathering of top academic, scientific and military experts from the USA, Russia, the UK, France, China, India, and Israel reached a general agreement that is captured in the Consensus Report; each participant presented an individual contribution that further fleshes out the dimensions of strategic stability. This unprecedented work provides joint concepts for all leaders of the nuclear powers to shape their decisions for the coming decades. And for the first time they can base their decisions on agreed scientific facts, not just political judgments

Provenance of arenites by G. G Zuffa( Book )

1 edition published in 1985 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Gian Gaspare Zuffa Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra Universitä della Calabria 87030 Castiglione Cosentino Stazione, Cosenza, ITALY The tradition has been to consider Sedimentology and Sedimen tary Petrology as quite separate areas of research. It is however impossible to arrive at an optimal description of sedimentary rocks without integrating the two fields since sedimentary processes and compositional aspects are strongly intertwined. The study of arenites is of particular importance in obtaining paleogeographic and paleotectonic reconstructions aimed at deter mining the geodynamics of the earth's crust. It also has important implications in exploration for and exploitation of hydrocarbons. At the NATO ASI Meeting on Reading Provenance from Arenites held in Calabria (Italy), June 3-ll, 1984, field sedimentologists and sedimentary petrologists were given opportunity to pool their resources in order to obtain better analyses of both source areas and depositional basins. The papers collected in this volume represent an edited ver sion of the lectures given and provide a comprehensive picture of the present state of the art since they include such important top ics as: l) the climate and relief of the source areas, 2) mechani cal transport of sediments and depositional processes, 3) postdep ositional processes, and 4) the methodology adopted for petrogra phic optical analyses. Particular attention has been paid to the limitations and errors introduced into paleogeographic and paleo tectonic reconstructions by incomplete and incorrect data
Technological choices for sustainability by Subhas K Sikdar( Book )

1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of the book is to critically evaluate current scientific work on defining the issue of sustainability and on measuring progress towards a sustainable state. It aims to provide a common understanding of how progress towards sustainability can be achieved by optimising technological development, environmental impact and socio-economic factors. A further objective is to identify the major trends in methodologies that assist progress towards sustainability

Trends in optical fibre metrology and standards( Book )

1 edition published in 1995 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Fibre Optics has gained prominence in: telecommunications, data transmission and distribution, cable television networks, sensing and control, light probing and instrumentation. The 1990's shows an increased expansion of optical fibre networks which respond to the rapid growth on a world scale of long distance trunk lines combined with a family of emerging optical based services in which fibre-to-the-home will have the greatest impact. There is already evidence that optical communications are moving toward higher bit-rates, wavelength transparency and irrelevance of signal formats. The rate of change in fibre optics and the emergence of new services will be a mere consequence of economics. The actual increasing of cost and the demand for high-date-rates or large bandwidth per transmission channels, and the lack of available space in the congested conduits in urban areas, strongly favour the technological change to fibre optics. The recognised advantages of fibre optic technologies and the unchallenged potential to respond to future needs requires the inclusion of fibre optics networking into new installations. Concomitantly, current progress in the field of optical fibres (optical fibre amplifiers, optical fibre switching, WDM, fibre gratings, etc.) unfold major technical advances and greater flexibility in the designs and engineering of networks, optical fibre components and instrumentation. The explosion of growth in fibre sensors, fibre probes and the myriad of fibre based components shows that we are only using a fraction of optical fibre potential
