Precarious visualities : new perspectives on identification in contemporary art and visual culture by Olivier Asselin( )

9 editions published between 2008 and 2014 in English and held by 1,426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Through the study of exemplary media works and practices - photography, film, video, performance, installations, web cams - scholars from various disciplines call attention to the unsettling of identification and the disablement of vision in contemporary aesthetics. To look at an image that prevents the stabilization of identification, identity and place; to perceive a representation that oscillates between visibility and invisibility; to relate to an image which entails a rebalancing of sight through the valorization of other senses; to be exposed, through surveillance devices, to the gaze of new figures of authority - the aesthetic experiences examined here concern a spectator whose perception lacks in certainty, identification, and opticality what it gains in fallibility, complexity, and interrelatedness. Precarious Visualities provides a new understanding of spectatorship as a relation that is at once corporeal and imaginary, and persistently prolific in its cultural, social, and political effects."--pub. desc
L'ère électrique = The electric age by Olivier Asselin( )

16 editions published in 2011 in French and English and held by 689 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The scientific discovery and mastery of electricity created as many important changes in modern society as did the invention of alphabetical writing in antiquity and movable type in the fifteenth century. It is more than a natural phenomenon that science has harnessed for human use; it is a central feature of the modern episteme. It has inspired writers and artists, propelled industry and innovation, and reshaped human social behaviour. Looking at a variety of topics including film, politics, and contemporary art, this volume explores the impact of electricity on knowledge, social practices, media, community life, and subjective experience

The permaculture orchard : beyond organic( Visual )

2 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 39 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Permaculture Orchard : Beyond Organic is a feature-length educational film that will teach you how to set up your own permaculture orchard at any scale. We recognize the limitations of the organic model as a substitute to conventional fruit growing, and want to propose a more holistic, regenerative approach based on permaculture principles. Based on 20 years of applied theory and trial and error, biologist and educator Stefan Sobkowiak shares his experience transforming a conventional apple orchard into an abundance of biodiversity that virtually takes care of itself. The concepts, techniques and tips presented in this film will help you with your own project, whether it is just a few fruit trees in your urban backyard, or a full-scale multi-acre commercial orchard."

Through documentary-style vignettes and choreographed movements inspired by famous arias for the voice and piano, The End of the Voice recounts the life story of Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini while presenting his works -- with the turn of the century as background. Although Puccini is thought to be the last of the great traditional Italian opera composers, the attention he paid to the innovations brought about by the musical avant-garde, and his constant preoccupation with pleasing a large audience, also make him one of the first Moderns of his time. Born to a Tuscan family in which musical talent seemed to be passed on from generation to generation, Puccini discovers quite early in life his own musical passion: opera

4 editions published in 2006 in French and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
