Dante Gabriel Rossetti by Dante Gabriel Rossetti( Book )

22 editions published in 2003 in English and Dutch and held by 887 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites. Together with Hunt and Millais, he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. His turbulent and romantic imagery has always beguiled and intrigued art-lovers." "This beautifully illustrated book, published to accompany the landmark Rossetti exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Walker in Liverpool, is the most thorough and up-to-date analysis of the life and career of this pivotal nineteenth-century English painter available today." "It reproduces all of his most famous works in glorious colour, and major sections are also devoted to Rossetti's subjects from Dante; his representations of artists and their models; his drawings of Elizabeth Siddal; the medievalizing watercolours of the late 1850s; his monumental decorative projects at Llandaff Cathedral and at the Oxford Union; and his contributions to the decorative arts in the form of book bindings and illustrations, stained glass, furniture and picture frames."--Jacket
The origins of l'art nouveau : the Bing empire by The origins of L'Art Nouveau( Book )

7 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 567 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It was on 26 December 1895 that art dealer Siegfried Bing (1838-1905) opened the doors of his Paris shop L'Art Nouveau. This long-awaited event represented the birth of a new movement in art." "The Origins of L'Art Nouveau is more than a monograph on Siegfried Bing, his shop and his national and international influence. It also analyses the development of Art Nouveau, and explores the fusion of applied and fine art into an all-embracing new stylistic form. Numerous previously unpublished photographs and works of art further elucidate the narrative."--Jacket
Prague 1900 : poetry and ecstasy by M Huig( Book )

9 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This lavishly illustrated book introduces the world of fin-de-siècle Prague. Around 1900, city's artists and artisans began to develop a particular ornamental language inspired by the contemporary revival of Czech culture and influenced by Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, and the Vienna Secession. To begin with, lyricism and poetic symbolism dominated the visual arts. Jan Preisler, one of the most important figures of the time, created sensual paintings and sculptures based on themes connected to the writings of such Czech authors as Zeyer and Brezina. Other artists such as Kobliha and Hlavácek focused on turbulent forms, dramatic expressions of torment, and the macabre. In the applied arts, exuberant floral and vegetal motifs were gradually transformed into geometric patterns.Prague 1900 charts the effects of the emergence of modernism and the search for Czech national identity in both the fine and the applied arts, as well as in architecture, music, and literature. The book also includes a wealth of illustrations of interiors, architectural and sculptural details and documentary photographs. Biographies of the most important artists are provided, as well as a full chronology of artists and events
