Gauguin and the origins of symbolism by Paul Gauguin( Book )

13 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the mid-1880s until his departure for Tahiti in 1891, Gauguin moved beyond Impressionism to become the leading figure of the Symbolist movement in painting. This departure from Impressionism led him to question the entire 'naturalist' tradition of European art from the Renaissance onwards. He sacrificed all of painting's descriptive devices in favour of line and flat colour. His path towards Symbolism can also be characterised as a 'primitive' quest, developed both in iconography and style. On the iconographic level, this tendency starts from the use of a number of pastoral themes representing scenes of rural life. This spiritual return was accompanied by a stylistic regression, a leap from naturalism towards archaic modes of representation. The volume follows this process through a series of encounters between Gauguin and his masters, his contemporaries and his pupils."--Jacket
Hopper by Edward Hopper( Book )

8 editions published in 2012 in English and French and held by 303 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume presents a definitive Hopper monograph. Published for a massive retrospective at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and the Grand Palais in Paris, it approaches Hopper's relatively small oeuvre in two sections. The first covers the artist's formative years from approximately 1900 to 1924, examining a selection of sketches, paintings, drawings, illustrations, prints and watercolors, which are considered alongside works by painters that influenced Hopper, such as Winslow Homer, Robert Henri, John Sloan, Edgar Degas and Walter Sickert. The second section considers the years from 1925 onwards, addressing his mature output through chronological but thematic groupings."--Jacket flap
The spectacular art of Jean-Léon Gérôme : 1824-1904 by Jean Léon Gérôme( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and French and held by 298 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gérôme was one of the most famous artists of his day, yet throughout his career he was the object of polemical debate and harsh criticism. Long stigmatized as the embodiment of sterile academicism, he is now considered to be one of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century. Gérôme's interest in Antiquity, his theatrical approach to history painting, and his complex relationships with the Orient and with the new medium of photography all contributed to his highly inventive imagery. Acquired by American collectors at an early date, Gérôme's oeuvre fired the new world's historical imagination and even inspired its favorite medium, the movies. This catalogue traces Gérôme's unique career and features his major works--from history paintings to polychrome sculptures--thereby casting the nineteenth century in a new light."--Page 4 of cover

7 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This illustrated appraisal of every one of Hans Memling's portraits illuminates the artist's extraordinary craftsmanship while exploring in depth the function of portraiture in the Netherlands during the fifteenth century." "Published to accompany a major touring exhibition, this catalogue provides a lavish overview of Memling's career, with a selection of some thirty portraits by the master and his school, including portrait-wings from diptychs and triptychs along with autonomous panels of individual patrons."--Jacket
Wyeth : Andrew & Jamie in the studio by Timothy J Standring( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For decades, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth have provided a continuous backdrop against which the twists and turns of American art can be compared, contrasted, and benchmarked. By approaching the Wyeths and their art with a specificity that transcends content and biography, Wyeth: Andrew and Jamie in the Studio provides readers with the opportunity to move beyond a visceral reaction and toward an understanding of the artists' work, media, mindset, and studio practice. Readers will be able to assess their predilection for the images in a more nuanced way, underpinning their reaction to an emotionally charged image with knowledge and practical understanding"--
Surrealism and the dream by José Jiménez( Book )

This autumn season, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is presenting Surrealism and the Dream, the first monographic exhibition devoted to the visual approach of Surrealist artists to the oneiric world. Curated by Jose Jimenez, the show advances Surrealism as an attitude towards life whose roots delve deep into the relationship between image and dream. The comprehensive array of photographs, paintings, collages, objects, sculptures and films that visitors will be able to enjoy points to the blurred nature of the borderline between reality and what appears before us in our dreams
Sonia Delaunay : art, design, fashion by Sonia Delaunay( Book )

12 editions published in 2017 in English and Spanish and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Chagall : Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Fundación Caja Madrid : 14/2-20/5/2012 by Marc Chagall( Book )

11 editions published in 2012 in Spanish and English and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marc Chagall is justly famed as one of modernism's greatest colorists, and its most articulate painter of dispossession, exile and human joy. Chagall also uniquely reconciled the motifs and concerns of Jewish culture with his strange amalgam of Symbolism, Fauvism and Cubism. His lifespan encompassed two world wars, the October Revolution of 1917 and continual uprooting, with lengthy spells in Paris, Moscow and New York; although he painted the ravages of these wars and the sufferings of the Jewish people, and although his art is steeped in the melancholia of exile, it never ceased to affirm life and to praise it. This beautifully produced volume, with its abundance of color plates and first-rate scholarship, celebrates Chagall in all his diversity, reproducing paintings, book illustrations to the Bible and works by Gogol and La Fontaine, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and prints. These works are contextualized in essays by Chagall scholars Meret Meyer, Jean-Louis Prat, Ekaterina Selezneva, Angela Lampe and Ángeles Caso, and in an extensive chronology of the artist's life, amply illustrated with photographs from his personal album
Gustave Caillebotte by Gustave Caillebotte( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is an invitation to discover Caillebotte, whose name has lately become more prominent, in part because of his pioneering blend of photography and painting. It particularly addresses Caillebotte's fondness for riverside and coastal scenes: He loved rowing and sailing, and his water landscapes, which feature colorful, glowing depictions of rowers on the Yerres, the Normandy coast, the banks of the Seine and the sailboats on the Argenteuil, are among his best-known works. Approximately 50 paintings, drawings, contemporary photographs and construction sketches and models for yachts create a comprehensive view of Caillebotte's achievement
Photorealism : 50 years of hyperrealistic painting( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"They devote themselves to the veneer of modern everyday life, the mirrored world of surfaces. Reflective shop windows, limousines with shiny chrome, garishly colored plastic kitsch, and urban scenes have been the favorite subjects of the Photorealists for fifty years. In a complicated work process, the artists employ technical aids to create painted illusions: they photograph their source materials, transfer them with the aid of slide projectors or scans, and then capture them precisely with the brush or spray gun on canvas. This publication presents the impressive works of art by leading figures in this movement, starting with sixties artists such as Richard Estes, Chuck Close, and Don Eddy and moving through three generations of artists to the hyper-realistic visual experiences of contemporary digital artists such as Yigal Ozeri, Raphaella Spence, and Robert Neffson."--Publisher's website

Renoir : intimacy by Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza( Book )

8 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The filmmaker Jean Renoir described how his father 'looked at flowers, women and clouds in the sky as other men touch and caress.' In contrast to the habitual conception of Impressionism, which reduces it to "the purely visual", this book, as the exhibition it accompanies, singles out the central role of tactile sensations in Pierre-Auguste Renoir's canvases, which are evident in all the different phases of his career and which he expressed in a wide range of genres, including group scenes, portraits and nudes, as well as still lifes and landscapes. This publication comprising more than 70 works by the artist, from museums and collections world-wide, reveals the way Renoir made use of the tactile qualities of volume, material and textures as a vehicle to depict intimacy in its different forms (social intimacy, among friends and family, or erotic) and how that imagery connects the work and the viewer to the sensuality of the brushstroke and the pictorial surface"--
Pissarro by Camille Pissarro( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 160 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Humble and colossal, as his friend Cezanne described him, Camille Pissarro is at once the most important and the least familiar of the leading Impressionist painters. As a mentor to that group, which he helped to convene, Pissarro was responsible for drafting the statutes of the artists' cooperative that launched the famous Impressionist exhibitions, which were the first to take art outside the academic confines of Paris' salon exhibitions; he was also the only painter to participate in all eight of those landmark shows, from 1874 to 1886, and was the first painter to develop and sustain the plein air practice for which the Impressionists are famed. This volume presents Pissarro as one of the great pioneers of modern art, appraising his career through five thematic and chrological chapters that offer a tour of his preferred landscapes and cities: On the Road to Impressionism, Louveciennes-London-Louveciennes 1869-72, Pontoise Revisited 1872-82, Eragny Landscapes 1884-1903 and City Views. It includes essays by some of the most rewned Pissarro scholars: Richard R. Brettell, who writes on the artist's involvement with anarchism; Joachim Pissarro (one of the authors of the Pissarro catalogue raisonne) on Monet and Pissarro's relationship in the 1890s; and Guillermo Solana on the motif of the road in Pissarro.Born on the island of Saint Thomas in the Antilles into a wealthy family of Jewish origin, Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) studied painting in Paris and Venezuela. He met Claude Monet, Auguste Reir and Alfred Sisley in 1859. Pissarro acted as pater familias t only to the Impressionist group, but also to the major Post-Impressionists, including Georges Seurat, Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin

Zurbarán : a new perspective : June 9-September 13, 2015( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 159 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume offers the most comprehensive overview in print--and the first substantial English-language monograph in decades--on the great 17th-century Spanish painter Zurbarán. It spans his entire career, from his earliest commissions to key works from his mature period, plus works recently rediscovered over the past few years. A contemporary of Velázquez, Zurbarán developed an austere vision that combined exacting realism with a palpable mysticism. Though he was sometimes known as "the Spanish Caravaggio" for his harsh use of chiaroscuro, Zurbarán's particular achievement was his creation of a more austere quietism, and a less foreboding if more melancholy atmosphere--qualities which lent themselves ideally to such genres as still lifes and his portraits of monks and martyrs, and which also ensured his importance for early modernism (especially Cubism). Examining this beloved painter's oeuvre across six themed sections, Zurbarán: A New Perspective includes work by a selection of his most talented pupils, and by his son Juan de Zurbarán, also a superb still-life painter. Exhibition: Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid, Spain (09.06-13.09.2015)
