The project is a site-specific art installation by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The documentary captures the soaring majesty of the project, along with its impact on thousands of amazed and occasionally sceptical witnesses who flocked to snowy Central Park to experience the art work over the course of 16 days, from the 12th of February, through to the 27th of February 2005. Christo and Jeanne-Claude : early works 1958-1969 ; [on the occasion of the exhibition "Christo and Jeanne-Claude, early works 1958-1969," organized by the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein at the Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin] by Christo( Book )

15 editions published in 2001 in 3 languages and held by 307 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this title the works of the early period (1958-1969) of artistic activities by Christo and Jeanne-Claude are united to show how their exceptional career developed. From the very early small packages to wrapped barrels and other wrapped objects like chairs, tables, typewriters, bottles, flowers and telephones to the period of storefronts - some of them life-size - and the first proposals to wrap entire buildings, the experience of this art-form is presented. Already in the sixties the artists moved their work out of the studio into open space to confront the general public with their art. Early examples like the "Dockside Packages" at Cologne Harbor in 1961, the "Iron Curtain-Wall of Oil Barrels" blocking the Rue Visconti in Paris in 1962 and the "Wrapped Fountain" and "Wrapped Medieval Tower" in Spoleto finally led to the "5,600 Cubicmeter Package, Documenta 4, Kassel" an Air Package 280 feet high and to the first wrapped buildings, the wrapping of the "Kunsthalle Bern" in 1968 and the "Wrapped Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago" in 1969. The book concludes with the work "Wrapped Coast, Little Bay, One million square feet, Sydney, Australia" when the wrapping of a whole coastline provided a taste of things to come in the following decade

Christo and Jeanne-Claude : remembering the Running fence by Brian O'Doherty( Book )

6 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The dynamic partnership of Christo and Jeanne-Claude spans more than four decades, and their enormous outdoor art installations are known the world over ... from 1972 to 1976, Christo and Jeanne-Claude conceived, planned, and created the Running Fence, an eighteen-foot-high white nylon fence that stretched more than twenty-four miles across Marin and Sonoma counties in northern California. ... It was a landmark event in contemporary art. [book title] revisits the ephemeral splendor of this remarkable outdoor installation and celebrates the Smithsonian American Art Museum's recent acquisition of the complete documentation exhibition for Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California, 1972-1976, an archive of more than 350 individual items, including fifty original preparatory works by Christo, a sixty-eight-foot-long scale model, more than 240 documentary photographs by Wolfgang Volz and Gianfranco Gorgoni, and fence materials from the original installation"--Inside cover

Christo and Jeanne-Claude : prints and objects : catalogue raisonné by Christo( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and German and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Each was born on the same day in 1935, and this unusual artist couple worked together until Jeanne-Claude's death in 2009, changing the art world in the process. For their dramatic large-scale installations such as 'The Gates' in NYC's Central Park, 'Wrapped Reichstag' in Berlin, and 'Running Fence' in Sonoma and Marin counties, California, they enveloped buildings and entire landscapes in various materials, revealing at the same time the essence and beauty of these structures and objects of nature. Refusing to accept commissions, and so in order to finance these enormous works of art themselves, Christo and Jeanne-Claude began making editions early on in their career-prints, collages, and objects. This completely updated, one-of-a-kind catalogue of works, designed by Schellmann Art and produced to the highest specifications, is an essential part of the story of these sui generis contemporary artists and a testament to their impressive breadth of vision and their independence and courage"--
The gates : project for Central Park, New York City : a work in progress by Christo( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 2004 in English and Italian and held by 202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On February 12, 2005, weather permitting, New York artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude will complete their temporary work of art, The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005." "First conceived in 1979, Christo and Jeanne-Claude's vision of 7,500 gates (each 16 feet high), following the edges of Central Park's 23 miles of footpaths, will transform Central Park. Saffron-colored fabric panels will hang seven feet above the ground blowing in the wind and delighting the public walking beneath with a warm glow of translucent color and free-floating grace. The project will remain for 16 days before The Gates is removed and the materials recycled." "This book, designed by Christo, records the evolution of The Gates project. Thirty-eight full-color illustrations of Christo's original preparatory works - from early sketches of Central Park to his most recent drawings, collages, maps, and technical diagrams - serve as the centerpiece for this book. Photographs from the community board hearings, public forums, public and private meetings, contract negotiations, and life-size tests complement the running narrative in this book, giving readers an insider's perspective on The Gates."--BOOK JACKET
Over the river : project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado by Christo( Book )

10 editions published in 2008 in Catalan and English and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1992, the infamous environmental installation artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude took their first trip west in search of a site for a new temporary artwork--in this case, a stream of successive transluscent fabric panels that would be suspended for two summer weeks across the banks of a Rocky Mountain river, high enough above the water to allow kayakers, rafters or pedestrians to drift along below it, and close enough to a road that the piece could be approached and enjoyed by car or bus. On subsequent trips they investigated the headwaters of 89 rivers in six states, logging 14,000 miles onto their odometer, until they finally settled on a site along the Arkansas River in the state of Colorado. Then they began the arduous process of getting permission from all of the necessary local bureaurocracies and activist groups. This book documents the process from 1992 until 2005, at which point the artists were still only halfway there. (The project will not come to fruition until the year 2010 at the earliest.) As with all previous projects, Over the River is financed entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude through the sale of preparatory work. These drawings, lithographs, collages and scale models are presented here, together with comprehensive documentary photographs

Christo and Jeanne-Claude : frühe Werke 1958-64 = Early works 1958-64 by Christo( Book )

3 editions published in 2009 in German and held by 144 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The monumental but temporary interventions of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, now beloved by millions across the world, began in a very different era, in late-1950s Paris, amid the antics of Yves Klein and the assemblage art of the Nouveaux Realistes. Composed in close co-operation with Christo and Jeanne-Claude, just prior to Jeanne-Claude's death in November 2009, "Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Early Works 1958-64," is the first publication in almost 40 years to deal in depth with the early work of the duo."--Alibris
Christo and Jeanne-Claude : Water Projects by Germano Celant( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in Italian and English and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Water Projects, edited by Germano Celant in collaboration with con CVJ Corporation, is the title of the catalogue (published in English and Italian) released on the occasion of the exhibition by the same title, opening in Brescia at the Santa Giulia Museum, April 7, 2016. The catalogue includes Christo and Jeanne-Claude's realized and not realized large-scale projects from 1961 to 2016. Besides the famous wrapped monuments, from the Kunsthalle in Bern (1967-1968) to the Reichstag in Berlin (1971-1995), the publication also includes the barriers made with barrels or with fabric, from Wall of Oil Barrells - The Iron Curtain in Paris (1961-62) to Valley Curtain in Rifle, Colorado (1960-62), the great inflatable objects, from 42,390 Cubic Feet Package of Minneapolis (1966) to 5600 Cubicmeter Package, Project for documenta IV in Kassel (1967-1968), and the fabric pathways, such as Wrapped Walk Ways in Kansas City (1977-1978), or doors, such as The Gates in New York (1979-2005). The seven Water Projects Christo and Jeanne-Claude's installations sharing a connection with water are considered in further depth. In these projects, from Running Fence, Sonoma and Marin Counties, California (1972-1976) to Over the River, project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado (1992), the artists worked establishing a close connection with natural, suburban and urban landscapes which all share a relation with water, be it an ocean, a sea, a lake or a river. Among the Water Projects we must mention The Floating Piers, an installation opening June 18 to July 3, 2016, which will allow visitors to walk across Lake Iseo and along its shores on a 3-kilometre route. Christo and Jeanne-Claude : urban projects by Christo( Book )

3 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Christo (born 1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) have always compared their work to that of urban planners. And it is true that the projects they have carried out around the world since the 1960s not only have huge dimensions but are also at the center of public debates and disputes. The very fact that their projects are subject to approval by local authorities makes them sometimes resemble public construction projects more than works of art. For the first time, this book gives a comprehensive account of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's urban projects. It presents preparatory drawings, collages and models for many little-known works from the artists' early career, some of which were never carried out, such as the planned wrapping of several New York City skyscrapers, as well as the spectacular large-scale projects of later years, such as the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris in 1985, the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1995 and the 2005 installation The Gates in New York's Central Park. In two detailed essays, the authors of the book explore Christo's extraordinary talent for drawing and investigate the artists' ambivalent perspective on urban space, which oscillates between a powerful critique of the city's impersonal modernism and a tribute to the liberal, democratic use of urban areas"--Publisher's website
