Common pavilions : the national pavilions in the Giardini in essays and photographs : 13th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2012 by Gabriele Basilico( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in Multiple languages and English and held by 110 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'Common Pavilions' is based on an exhibition curated by Diener & Diener Architects within the 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennial in 2012. Architecture's social and cultural reality was the theme of the 2012 exhibition, titled Common Ground. Bringing the architectural significance of the 29 national pavilions to the attention of visitors, who usually do not really notice these buildings and their individual character and atmosphere when seeing an exhibition there, was the aim of the Common Pavilions project. The celebrated Italian photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944 2013) has taken pictures of all the pavilions in the Giardini di Venezia. His masterful images are featured in large-format and lavish duotone printing. 30 authors from all 29 nations - architects, philosophers, and artists - have contributed short essays, writing on 'their' national pavilion, its history and its identity as a space for presenting art. Basilico's images and the essays merge into a rich and atmospheric panorama of what is probably the world's best known exhibition site
The inevitable specificity of cities : Napoli, Nile Valley, Belgrade, Nairobi, Hong Kong, Canary Islands, Beirut, Casablanca( Book )

8 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What is a city? What determines its specifity? What shapes its quality? The evolution of the contemporary city does not follow a linear movement. It is shaped by transformation processes that are directed toward often distant and conflicting goals. Even though cities are inscribed into global processes and networks, they develop their own specific ways of dealing with these conditions. They tend to produce and reproduce their own specificity, their own patterns and character traits. Using the categories of territory, power, and difference - also lending the book its structure - the texts analyze different case studies of cities and urbanized territories, ranging from the Canary Islands to Hong Kong and Nairobi, unfolding the distinctiveness of their physical and social existences
Die Schweiz - ein städtebauliches Portrait( )

6 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in German and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Territory : on the development of landscape and city by Contemporary City Institute ETH Studio Basel( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Between 2008 and 2014, ETH Studio Basel, under the guidance of Roger Diener and Marcel Meili, has been investigating the process of urbanisation taking place outside cities. Territory - in the context of this investigation denotes both: the surroundings that a city subsumes into its own structure and the core city itself, which is the centre of this process of urbanisation, or "confiscation". Investigated were six regions on six continents: The Nile Valley with the dense corset of natural landscape surrounding a linear city; Rome-Adria, where territorial cells have formed within the territory, spawning an urban type of tremendous dynamism; Florida, presenting highly complex patterns of territorial organisation; Vietnam's Red River Delta, where recent reform exposed traditional settlement and cultivation of the delta to freer forces; Oman, where urbanisation of a territory essentially means reclaiming the desert with the immediate necessity to develop a system for water distribution; and Belo Horizonte, where natural conditions likewise play a major role in organising the territory as surface mining entails huge transformations of the natural terrain. The new book features two introductory essays on ETH Studio Basel's research approach and on terminology, concise illustrated reports on the six regions, and four concluding topical essays

Landschaften : eine Architekturtheorie in Bildern by René Furer( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in German and held by 32 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

4 editions published in 2010 in German and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Zurich, the largest metropolitan area in Switzerland, has in the past 30 years always opened up new areas. The city has developed itself into a metropolitan area with great momentum. As a metropolitan region has acquired a strong international charisma and a dense, extensive network. Unlike the classic big city, however, Zurich no longer has an obvious shape and size. In reality, the area is criss-crossed with the boundaries of cantons and communities, and degenerates into small-scale organization: Die Metropoitanregion is a large-organized space that is conceived small. Is it possible, not only to organize Zurich in a large way, but also to build it bigger? Can we imagine a metropolitan region that is not only wide-scale, but also conceived on such a scale? This study attempts to explore on the basis of a paradigmatic project, construction potential for a city conceived on a larger scale. As the most dominant landscape feature of the region Lake Zurich is the symbolic center and inclusive background figure of the proposal. It conceives the banks of the lake becoming a part of the city
