The fate of a crown by L. Frank Baum( Book )

3 editions published in 1905 in English and held by 22 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Fate of the Crown was the first novel of Baum's short-lived adult fiction career. Featuring an adventure story, political subtext, melodrama and a mystery plot, the work was a major success in the years after its publishing. Baum penned the novel under the pseudonym Schuyler Staunton not only because of the risk of shattering his successful young adult literature career with a risqué novel, but because the book's plot included historical figures of the period. Set in 1889 during the revolution that ended the Brazilian Empire, the novel mentions Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca, the first president of the Brazilian Republic and Emperor Pedro II, the last ruler of the Brazilian Empire. The novel's protagonist Robert Harcliffe takes a job as a secretary to a large company in Brazil, which he later learns is a front to a dangerous criminal enterprise. After evading death and becoming a member of the Brazilian resistance, Robert falls in love with the Republican leader's servant, Lesba, and works with her to uncover the mystery of some missing treasure that could be the key to the rebellion's success
