Turner and the elements by J. M. W Turner( Book )

6 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A painter of the elements, J. M. W. Turner depicted in his landscapes natural forces such as wind, fire, and water with an emphasis on their considerable destructive power and mans raw vulnerability in the face of it. And be they storm scenes, avalanches, or disasters at sea, Turners oil paintings and watercolors were also informed by contemporary research in the natural sciences. Conceived by the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg and edited by leading Turner experts, this volume comprises eighty-five masterpieces from the Tate Gallery in London that are also scheduled for the National Museum in Krakow and the UKs newly opened Turner Contemporary. The works presented here exemplify Turners extensive knowledge of nature and the impact of its forces, garnered from a lifelong fascination, and show that important developments in the artists technique over the course of several decades mirrored the many new scientific insights of the time. Especially significant is Turners stunningly realistic depiction of light, which made many of his canvases seem to actually glow. With 150 lush, full-color illustrations, this volume shows how Turners ever-deepening understanding of the natural worldand of light in particularearned him his place in the pantheon of great European artists. -- Publisher's blurb
High society : American portraits of the Gilded Age : Bucerius Kunst Forum, Hamburg, June 7-August 31, 2008 by Bucerius Kunst Forum( Book )

13 editions published in 2008 in English and German and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The period of rapid industrial expansion in America after the Civil War is known as the Gilded Age. The era saw the formation of great personal fortunes and the almost feverish amassing of goods and art to fill the palatial homes of the rich. The commissioning of portraits was one way for the new aristocracy to express their wealth and demonstrate their achievements, and the stunning works of art created during these years remain among the finest examples of portraiture. Lavishly illustrated with 175 portraits and period photographs, High Society brings to life the colourful personalities of the major artists and patrons of the Gilded Age, and, through essays exploring such themes as women artists and new public perceptions of the artist, provides an entertaining introduction to a significant chapter in American art."--BOOK JACKET
Max Beckmann : Landschaft als Fremde : Hamburger Kunsthalle, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Kunstforum Wien by Max Beckmann( Book )

Gerhard Richter : images of an era by Gerhard Richter( Book )

8 editions published in 2011 in 3 languages and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume presents and describes 50 of the artist's works with essays by leading Richter experts. It also includes personal testimonials in previously unpublished letters as well as a conversation between Gerhard Richter and Richter expert Uwe Schneede. This book provides new insight into the complexity of Richter's imagery in which banality and evil confront one another: the dreams and aspirations of the times, fast cars and new travel possibilities; personal memories; the oppressive past; contemporary politics; and both trivial and meaningful everyday objects. The cycle 18 Oktober 1977 (1988), which deals with the death of members of the Red Army Faction ('Baader-Meinhof gang') plays an important role in our understanding of the evocative power of these pictures from the 1960s. Richter's intense preoccupation with this event concludes this group of paintings from photographs. This cycle, which was loaned to the Bucerius Kunst forum in Hamburg by the New York Museum of Modern Art, has led to a new interpretation and positioning of Richter's work

From Hopper to Rothko : America's road to modern art by Ortrud Westheider( Book )

6 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 153 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of rarely seen masterpieces from The Phillips Collection traces the development of American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism. During the Gilded Age, American artists like Julian Alden Weir, John Henry Twachtman, Ernest Lawson, and others developed landscape paintings which set the course for modern art in America. Revelations such as these are common within the pages of this book, which examines Duncan Phillips's interest in collecting and his promotion of living artists. Including essays by European and American experts, this publication of 68 works by 50 artists presents paintings by Maurice Prendergast, Arthur Dove, John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Charles Sheeler, Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, and Richard Diebenkorn. Together these magnificent works tell the tale of a nation and artistic expression growing in confidence and diversity. Exhibition: Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Germany (17.06.-03.10.2017)
Impressionism : the art of landscape by O Westheider( Book )

5 editions published in 2017 in 3 languages and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Impressionist landscapes are not spontaneous atmospheric paintings, but rather a place from which the impressionist artist carried out their experiments. Color doesn't represent light, it is light. Landscape is liberated from all historic and symbolic presumption, making it impressionism's primary genre and encouraging the viewer to use all their senses. The present catalog examines this new reappraisal."--Back cover of jacket
Gerhard Richter : abstraction by Gerhard Richter( Book )

5 editions published in 2018 in English and German and held by 136 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is the first to focus solely on the abstract strategies and processes contained in Gerhard Richter's body of work. In the early 1960s, the artist began to call painting into question, an exploration that continues to occupy him to this day. In the 1970s, he responded to the rejection of painting by creating a series of monochrome works in gray. Moreover, he viewed the color gray as a means of addressing political themes without depicting them in an idealized manner. In his Inpainting series of the 1970s, Richter made brushstrokes and the application of paint his subject. In other works, he photographed small details from his palette and transferred them onto large canvases in a photorealistic manner. In his color charts, he subjected painting to an objective process by leaving the arrangement of the colors to chance. Since 1976, Richter has created a series of abstract works by applying paint with a brush, scraper, and palette knife, alternating between conscious decision-making and random processes

Behind the mask : artists in the GDR by Allemagne) Museum Barberini (Potsdam( Book )

4 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Behind the Mask: Artists in the GDR focuses on the wide variety of artistic self-staging in the GDR, between public and private, prescribed collectivism and creative individuality. The intention of the GDR's official state art was to exert political influence and this resulted in ideological entanglements that have been examined in numerous publications and exhibitions in recent years. Yet how did artists in the GDR critically scrutinize themselves and their own art when their prescribed role was to represent the interests of the state? The pertinent essays and outstanding reproductions in this volume draw a comprehensive picture of art in the GDR from a new and knowledge-enhancing perspective."--

Color and light : the Neo-impressionist Henri-Edmond Cross by Frédéric Frank( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in Undetermined and English and held by 78 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Inspired by the work of Realist painters such as Gustave Courbet and Francois Bonvin, Henri-Edmond Cross's earliest paintings were compositions in dark, somber colors. Following his involvement with the avant-gardist circle around Georges Seurat, he gradually adopted the Neo-Impressionist technique and began to develop a unique visual vocabulary. After his move to the Mediterranean coast in 1891, Cross's palette became increasingly lighter, resulting in dazzlingly colorful landscapes, genre paintings, and compositions that are overlaid with mythological and allegorical allusions. This volume traces Cross's artistic trajectory through all stages of his prolific career and situates his masterful approach to color and light within the broader context of the European avant-garde of his time. In addition, it examines the painter's anarchist sympathies and the political dimensions of his depictions of utopian sceneries. Exhibition: Museum Barberini, Potsdam, Germany (17.11.2018-17.02.2019)
