Gauguin and Impressionism by Richard R Brettell( Book )

17 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 1,008 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was introduced into the Impressionist circle by Camille Pissarro and contributed major works to five of the eight Impressionist exhibitions between 1879 and 1886. During these years he transformed himself from a banker-stockbroker into a professional artist and from a family man into a solitary searcher for artistic, moral, and spiritual truths. Yet this vital period of Gauguin's life has usually been dismissed as a mere prelude to his brilliant career as an anti-Impressionist. This illustrated book reconsiders Gauguin's apprenticeship as an Impressionist and reassesses his contributions to the movement through the extraordinarily subtle and beautiful paintings, sculpture, and ceramic works he created during the years before 1887." "Richard R. Brettell and Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark argue that Gauguin's Impressionist paintings compare in quality to those of Sisley, Morisot, or Cassatt and that as a sculptor he was second only to Degas. His sculptures and ceramics were even more searching and radical than his early paintings and are crucial to the understanding of his development. Gauguin grappled with the thorniest issues debated by the French avant-garde, and no member of the Impressionist group created works as enigmatic or as wideranging, both artistically and emotionally."--Jacket

Vilhelm Hammershøi, 1864-1916 : Danish painter of solitude and light by Vilhelm Hammershøi( Book )

21 editions published in 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book - the catalogue accompanying a widely acclaimed exhibition at Ordrupgaard, Copenhagen, the Musee d'Orsay, Paris, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York - reveals the mysterious, melancholy world evoked in Hammershoi's works." "Hammershoi's originality was recognized by his peers, but his work was too controversial to gain much support in Denmark during his lifetime. However, it was appreciated by collectors and institutions in England, France, Germany, and Italy, where it became known in exhibitions from the 1890s until his death. Frequently compared to Vermeer in his extraordinary use of line, light, and shadow, Hammershoi punctuates his hallmark interiors and landscapes with a mood of concentrated solitude. His remarkable portraits of friends and family become psychological studies, often revealing the isolation and loneliness of long, dark Scandinavian Winters."--Jacket
Gustave Caillebotte by Gustave Caillebotte( Book )

12 editions published in 2008 in German and English and held by 249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is an invitation to discover Caillebotte, whose name has lately become more prominent, in part because of his pioneering blend of photography and painting. It particularly addresses Caillebotte's fondness for riverside and coastal scenes: He loved rowing and sailing, and his water landscapes, which feature colorful, glowing depictions of rowers on the Yerres, the Normandy coast, the banks of the Seine and the sailboats on the Argenteuil, are among his best-known works. Approximately 50 paintings, drawings, contemporary photographs and construction sketches and models for yachts create a comprehensive view of Caillebotte's achievement

Matisse and the Eskimos : an overlooked chapter in art( Book )

4 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most people are familiar with Henri Matisse's colorful images from the south of France and the monumental paper cuts by which he proved himself as one of the greatest colorists of the 20th century. However, only a few are aware that Matisse, in his twilight years, directed his attention and creative motivation towards the North, in a series of black and white depictions of Eskimos, whose faces and mask art he was introduced to by his son-in-law's collection of Inuit masks and the Danish polar explorer Knud Rasmussen's books. The exhibition 'Matisse and the Eskimos' draws attention to an overlooked niche in Matisse's late work, in which he increasingly simplifies and radicalizes his portraits and figurative representations and endows them with the monumentality of the mask

French art at Ordrupgaard : complete catalogue of paintings, sculptures, pastels, drawings, and prints by Charlottenlund. Ordrupgaard( Book )

4 editions published in 2011 in English and Norwegian and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Ordrupgaard Museum in Charlottenlund—a suburb in the north part of Copenhagen—is home to one of the most high-caliber collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century French art in the world. Its founder, insurance magnate Wilhelm Hansen, wanted to promote awareness of French painting. His first acquisitions were works by Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Auguste Renoir. As a collector, Hansen focused on Impressionism, but he also explored artistic currents occurring both before and after the Impressionist period. Hence, the works at the Ordrupgaard represent a variety of styles: Romanticism (Eugène Delacroix), the Barbizon School (Théodore Rousseau), Realism (Gustave Courbet), Modernism (Édouard Manet), and Symbolism (Paul Gauguin). This publication provides a thorough overview of this outstanding collection."--Publisher description
