"From 1989 through 1993, photographer John Yang undertook an intensive photographic study of the ornamental sandstone reliefs on New York City brownstones and tenements of the late 19th century. The result is Over the Door, a meticulously prepared and exquisitely produced volume of urban portraiture - Yang's photographs capture the various moods of the many sculptured personalities that stand watch over the doorways, spandrels, and arches of Manhattan. The photographs are also a study of the effects of time on these carvings, which are rapidly deteriorating from weathering as well as the happenstance of real estate development - demolition and renovation each take their toll on the carvings." The SPGG effluent which contained a significant percentage of K2CO3 particulate was particularly effective for re-ignition protection, a scenario which dominates agent mass requirements for the compressed halogenated liquids. A number of measurements were made during the suppression tests. Measurements included gas temperatures, the re-ignition source temperature, the cold-flow agent concentrations (no fuel spray or fire present), and velocity measurements. This information was utilized to gain insight into the mechanisms of fire suppression with the different suppressant types. A simple model for SPGG delivery was developed. Assuming plug type flow, the transient average agent concentrations were calculated in the nacelle and compared to measurements. The results give reasonable agreement

Ischemic injury occurs when the flow of blood is reduced or blocked to an area of the body and can cause significant tissue damage by generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), activation of apoptotic pathways and through induction of the inflammatory response. Restoration of blood flow and reperfusion of the blocked site, while essential, can generate a second injury that itself needs to be controlled. Together the two injuries are termed ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. This type of injury is frequently encountered in medicine and is a major medical problem. Therapeutic strategies to combat I/R injury include the introduction of compounds that can scavenge ROS or can induce metabolic pathways with the effect of inhibiting apoptosis. Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE), a polyphenolic compound found in propolis, has been shown to protect a variety of cells types against ROS in vitro and has also been shown to induce a variety of genes including hemeoxygenase 1 (HMOX-1), an enzyme that has been implicated in a cytoprotective pathway. Despite showing significant cytoprotection of cells against oxidant stress in vitro, CAPE is readily hydrolyzed in plasma and is also quickly removed from circulation. This result may explain the limited cytoprotective effects of CAPE in vivo. We have synthesized a series of CAPE amide derivatives, including Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Amide (CAPA), with the aim of improving CAPE's stability properties while maintaining the cytoprotective effects of the parent compound. We found that CAPA, in addition to 2 other amide derivatives, were able to protect human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) against ROS to a similar degree as CAPE. In addition, we have observed significant improvement in plasma stability of CAPA over CAPE at multiple temperatures. The elimination half-life of CAPA from the systemic circulation was also seen to be significantly improved over CAPE following intravenous administration to male Sprague-Dawley rats. The longer residence time of CAPA over CAPE in circulation may potentially result in greater cytoprotection in vivo

Flooding is one of the most weather related safety hazards in California and has caused massive property damage and/or loss, and human casualties. Flooding occurs due to the fact that it is a drainage basin for thousands of acres of foothills and mountain land surrounding the valley. Snowmelt and precipitation would runoff and drain to the central valley before entering the ocean. Due to its diverse natural landscape, low elevation and flat nature, California's central valley is one of the most flood prone areas in the world. California has developed many systems of flood management facilities including flood control reservoirs, levees, weirs, diversions, etc. However, potential for flood hazards in residential areas remains serious due to uncertainty in weather patterns and developments in floodplains. It is often believed that these systems will protect areas from all flood disaster. Although it is true that these systems provide a level of protection, residual risk of flooding still exists indicating that these systems were designed to reduce the risks of flooding, and not to eliminate the risk completely. Flood forecasting is one of the key flood management practices in the United States. Early flood warming has proven to be critical for better management of the flood risk to reduce flood related life loss and property damages during high water events. Availability of appropriate forecasting tools and procedures that allows timely and accurate flood forecasting helps flood emergency response managers to make necessary decisions for preparedness, response and recovery from significant flood events. The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and California Nevada River Forecast Center (CNRFC) jointly forecast flood warning stages at 96 locations along the rivers and streams in the state of California. A coupled one dimensional (1-D) and two dimensional (2-D) hydraulic modeling system has been used for this study to focus on the impact of high stages including flood, danger and beyond in the Bear Creek on the residential areas and facilities within the City of Merced, California. This study attempts to improve the understanding of application of a coupled 1-D/2-D Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) numerical model in real time forecasting of flood warning stages in the Bear Creek. This study will also improve the understanding of the impacts of these flood warning stages in terms of inundation extents, timing to support warnings and evacuation priorities, reducing human casualties and minimizing property damages by undertaking steps to recover from flood waters

Abstract: Characterization of dissolved organic matter/nitrogen (DOM/DON) is critical in water quality assessment and nutrient management in watershed or ecosystem. This study was to investigate the link between DOM/DON and its source using fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). Water samples were collected from various aquatic systems in a watershed located in central Missouri, including rural watershed with various land use and land cover (LULC), landfill, and constructed wetland. PARAFAC results based on EEM spectroscopy revealed four DOM components: two humic/fulvic acid-like components, one xenobioic-like component, and one protein-like component (f4). The f4 score was found highly correlated to LULC, indicating its distinctive EEM structure in relation to source. It is believed that the f4 score could be used as a surrogate for DOM/DON source-tracking in complex ecosystems. The nitrogen 1s X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of the solid DOM showed a close relationship between N oxidation state and its origin. The classification of the sample origins by the N oxidation state confirmed the grouping by the f4 score of EEM/PARAFAC. This study demonstrated that EEM/PARAFAC could be used as a tool for DOM/DON source tracking, point or non-point source pollution control, and understanding of DOM/DON fate and transport in complex aquatic ecosystems. Highlights: Protein-like fluorophore could be used to classify water source. The score of the fluorophore was related to land use/land cover and precipitation. XPS analysis revealed that the oxidation state of DON was source-dependent. Water source classification by fluorophores was validated by N-1s oxidation state
