Alice Neel, Uptown' explores Neel's interest in the extraordinary diversity of twentieth century New York City and the people amongst whom she lived. The selected portraits include cultural and political figures admired by Neel, among them playwright, actor, and author Alice Childress; the sociologist Horace R. Cayton, Jr., whose 1945 Black Metropolis: A Study of Negro Life in a Northern City is among the key academic studies of the African American urban experience in the early twentieth century; the community activist and cultural advocate Mercedes Arroyo; and the academic Harold Cruse, known for known for his widely-published academic book The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual (1967) and for teaching at LeRoi Jones's Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School in Harlem. Marcel Dzama first gained fame with his drawings, but has recently expanded his practice to encompass film and three-dimensional work, developing an immediately recognizable language that draws from a diverse range of references and influences, including Dada and Marcel Duchamp. Created in close collaboration with the artist, this publication includes work from his 2013 exhibition at David Zwirner in London, which featured three videos inspired by the game of chess; puppets and masks based on the characters; and drawings, collages, dioramas, paintings and sculptural works. Dzama utilized the architecture of the gallery itself--an eighteenth-century Georgian townhouse--by hanging puppets from a skylight above the five-story building's central spiral staircase and placing monitors in the windows so videos were viewed from the street. Among the drawings included is the large-scale, four-part Myth, Manifestos and Monsters, in which characters from the films line up alongside figures from the artist's earlier repertoire. Other drawings, such as two large-scale works executed on piano scroll, depict the characters in poses that mirror their movements and dancing in the films, while a series of new collages feature this imagery in more unexpected contexts. Five small paintings depicting a lone female terrorist seated on a bed emphasize the underlying tension between reality and fiction that characterizes all of the works gathered here. --Amazon

This publication documents an exhibition of Donald Judd's work held at David Zwirner in New York in 2011, which presented works drawn from the artist's seminal 1989 exhibition held at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Germany. Consisting of 12 identically scaled anodized aluminum works, the historic exhibition at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden was significant in that it marked the first time Judd used colored anodized aluminum in such a large, floor-mounted format. The combinations of materials, dividers and colors--which differ from box to box--thus determine the singular nature of each work within a finite number of variable possibilities. John McCracken (1934-2011) occupies a singular position within the recent history of American art, as his work melds the restrained formal qualities of Minimalist sculpture with a distinctly West Coast sensibility expressed through color, form and finish. He developed his early sculptural work while studying painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in the late 1950s and early 1960s. While experimenting with increasingly three-dimensional canvases, the artist began to produce objects made with industrial materials, including plywood, sprayed lacquer and pigmented resin, creating the highly reflective, smooth surfaces that he was to become known for. Also featured is the video installation, Song of a Manhattan Suicide Addict, in which the artist herself is seen performing a song she composed while an animated slideshow of selected artworks moves behind her and the two mirrored infinity rooms. Infinity Mirrored Room-The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away encompassed a cube-shaped, mirror-paneled room that featured a shallow reflecting pool as its floor; hundreds of multicolored LED lights were suspended at varying heights from the ceiling, flickering on and off in a strobelike effect. Another mirrored infinity room, Love Is Calling, stands as one of Kusama's most immersive, kaleidoscopic environments to date. "Donald Judd writings", copublished by Judd Foundation and David Zwirner Books, is the most comprehensive collection of the artist's writings assembled to date. This timely publication includes Judd's best-known essays organized chronologically with little-known texts previously published in limited editions. This new collection also includes unpublished college essays and hundreds of never-before-seen handwritten notes, a critical but unknown part of Judd's writing practice. Judd's earliest published writing, consisting largely of reviews for hire, defined the terms of art criticism in the 1960s, but his essays as an undergraduate at Columbia, published here for the first time, contain the seeds of his later writing, and allow readers to trace the development of his critical style. The writings that followed Judd's early reviews are no less significant art-historically, but have been relegated to smaller publications and have remained largely unavailable until now. The largest addition of newly available material is Judd's unpublished notes--transcribed from his handwritten accounts of and reactions to subjects ranging from the politics of his time, to the literary texts he admired most, from complaints about pluralism in art to his admiration for Giambattista Vico, and through him, Lucretius. "Well known for his radical "anarchitectural" interventions throughout the 1970s, Gordon Matta-Clark (1943-78) was always deeply, though less publicly, committed to drawing. His works on paper - which span three-dimensional reliefs, calligraphy and notebook entries - capture the interdisciplinary spirit that defined the art world in the 1970s, testifying to his interest in the crossovers between visual and performance arts. This book documents his extraordinary accomplishment as a draftsman. Organized by theme, the catalogue presents selections from Matta-Clark's Cut Drawings, Energy Rooms, Energy Trees and his own "calligraphy," many of which have never been published. Perhaps the best known of the group, the Cut Drawings explore smaller-format versions of his architectural interventions; slicing meticulously through several layers of paper, gesso or cardboard, Matta-Clark created flat sculptural works that emphasized the voids created by extracting matter. In the summer of 2013, Raymond Pettibon (born 1957) converted the David Zwirner exhibition space into an improvised studio, in order to prepare the drawings and collages for his critically acclaimed show at the gallery. The works ranged from depictions of Joe DiMaggio as a young boy, Bob Dylan and the comic strip character Bazooka Joe to pieces dovetailing popular imagery with quotations from Marcel Proust, William Faulkner, Henry James, Gustave Flaubert or the Bible, and addressing themes of violence, humor, sex, evolution, religion, politics, literature, youth, art history and sports. This volume documents both the making of these works during Pettibon's intensive tenure in the space and the finished works themselves.
