Bauhaus : a conceptual model by Bauhaus-Archiv (Berlin)( Book )

7 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"One of Walter Gropius' guiding principles in founding the Bauhaus was that "design is neither an intellectual nor a material affair, but simply an integral part of the stuff of life, necessary for everyone in a civilized society." As a result of this ethos, Bauhaus artists and designers experimented freely with everything from painting to furniture, producing countless masterpieces in many genres. This comprehensive volume takes stock of the Bauhaus' output by highlighting 68 projects, with a particular focus on neglected aspects of the school's legacy. A different author is assigned to respond to each work, creating an inventory of celebrated and lesser-known works that helps the reader to tangibly cohere the Bauhaus' daunting achievements. Marking the ninetieth anniversary of the school's founding, this comprehensive volume, with nearly 400 color illustrations, is made possible through the collaborative efforts of three institutions: the Bauhaus-Archiv Museum of Design in Berlin, Dessau's Stiftung Bauhaus and the Bauhaus-Museum Weimar (Klassik Stiftung). Also featured are essays by the Director of the Bauhaus-Museum in Weimar, Michael Siebenbrodt, and the artist and writer, Jeff Wall."--Jacket

Only an idea has the power to spread so far." Ludwig Mies van der Rohe The Bauhaus, one of the icons of modernism, was controversial from the start--not only because of internal strife, but also due to critique or enmities from the outside. And the controversy did not end with the closure of the Bauhaus itself. Yet nothing else revealed Bauhaus ideas and ideology as well as these confrontations did. Through them, the basic issues of the modernist program became clear. It became obvious that there was no such thing as one kind of modernism, just as there was no ONE Bauhaus; instead, there were different, contradictory, and even oppositional movements and positions: the Bauhauses. Few cultural movements have been as politically instrumentalized as the Bauhaus has. These controversies reflect the relationship between politics and culture in the twentieth century, and hence, the history of the construction of German identity

Human - space - machine : stage experiments at the Bauhaus by Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau( Book )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1921, Walter Gropius founded a theater workshop at the Bauhaus. It conducted new research and experiments on the relationship between humans and technology. The central protagonists Lothar Schreyer, Oskar Schlemmer, and László Moholoy-Nagy investigated the issues of mechanization, machine industrialization, and rationalization. They sought a new, meaningful relationship with the dynamized, increasingly technically animated environment. In their stage laboratory, they developed abstract motion studies, designed atmosphere machines, and built theater apparatus. They also organized the famous Bauhaus celebrations, where they staged themselves as a collective of 'new humans.' For the first time, an exhibition and a catalog with sketches, drawings, photographs as well as films, figurines, costumes, models, and apparatus are now devoted to the experiments and concepts of the legendary Bauhaus Stage"--Publisher's website

A massive reduction in the population and a change in economic structures have meant the people of eastern Germany have had to face enormous challenges over the past 20 years. As part of the International Building Exhibition Urban Redevelopment 2010 nineteen towns and cities in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt have implemented innovative projects and formulated exemplary solutions as to how shrinking towns and cities could be designed. This book gives a wide-ranging view of the methods, methodology, and results. Participants, independent experts and critics have their say. A historical review and a basic representation of the urban developments of the last two decades show the causes of the shrinking processes and the initial situation for the IBA. Three scenarios on the themes town, landscape and climate outline questions and possible developments for Saxony-Anhalt up to the year 2050. With the IBA, Saxony-Anhalt has instigated a laboratory for the city of tomorrow whose issues are of international relevance
