Cities of light : two centuries of urban illumination by Sandy Isenstadt( Book )

11 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cities of Light is the first global overview of modern urban illumination, a development that allows human wakefulness to colonize the night, doubling the hours available for purposeful and industrious activities. Urban lighting is undergoing a revolution due to recent developments in lighting technology, and increased focus on sustainability and human-scaled environments. Cities of Light is expansive in coverage, spanning two centuries and touching on developments on six continents, without diluting its central focus on architectural and urban lighting. Covering history, geography, theory, and speculation in urban lighting, readers will have numerous points of entry into the book, finding it easy to navigate for a quick reference and or a coherent narrative if read straight through. With chapters written by respected scholars and highly-regarded contemporary practitioners, this book will delight students and practitioners of architectural and urban history, area and cultural studies, and lighting design professionals and the institutional and municipal authorities they serve. At a moment when the entire world is being reshaped by new lighting technologies and new design attitudes, the longer history of urban lighting remains fragmentary. Cities of Light aims to provide a global framework for historical studies of urban lighting and to offer a new perspective on the fast-moving developments of lighting today."--Publisher's website

Lighting design & process by Office for Visual Interaction( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 88 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For nearly two decades, Office for Visual Interaction (OVI) has been creating inventive lighting designs, illuminating the world's most prominent architectural works. The New York Times Building, the United States Air Force Memorial, a streetlight for the City of New York, the historic Rookery Building or the Scottish Parliament, are part of a new design canon that has captivated designers and visitors alike. As the name itself states, OVI is inspired by light's interaction with finishes and materials. Through the activation of surfaces, light and shadow become a natural extension of the architectural language, integrated and woven into the building fabric rather than applied as an additive element. Impeccably designed and illustrated with more than 400 stunning images, sketches, illustrations and graphics, this book is an essential companion to the art and science of lighting design and an unprecedented account of one of the world's leading architectural lighting design firms

Preservation of monuments & culture of remembrance : using the example of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe by Gerda Breuer( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 15 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the last few years several of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's buildings were restored. Of all things, the meticulousness of the structural details, which was always so important to Mies when he devised his designs, is absent in many cases of restored Mies buildings today. In the exhibition in Heerlen, the curator Andrea Croé does not address the broad spectrum of Mies's structures that have been restored or converted, but rather focuses on the five major exemplary edifices: The exhibition showcases five current best-practice examples in Europe and the United States. Chicago is represented by Crown Hall on the IIT campus, the neighboring Robert F. Carr Memorial Chapel, and the apartment high-rises on Lake Shore Drive. From Europe two pre-War projects were selected whose subsequent use could scarcely be greater in contrast: Whereas Villa Tugendhat in Brno, having been restored as far as possible to its original state, was turned into a museum, the Verseidag production and warehouse buildings in Krefeld, some of which are still ruins while others are in the process of being restored, will soon be the heart of a new business park for creatives. Exhibition: Schunck Glaspaleis, Heerlen, The Netherlands (10.04.-07.08.2016)
