Visionaries & fanatics : type design & the private press by Russell Maret( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Russell Maret explores the future of the private press and the division between the private press and the fine press. The fine printer, often a commercial outfit, leaves proportion, legibility, and craftsmanship as secondary principles, where as the private press printer is possessed with an irrepressible need to make books, containing characteristics of iconoclasm and reverence. Richly illustrated with color images, the book was designed by Russell Maret and printed in an edition of 500 copies at Peter Koch Printers. The cover was printed from antique wood and metal types in the Koch collection."--Oak Knoll website

Mediaeval in Padua by Russell Maret( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 33 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Follow Russell and Annie through the mediæval city of Padua as they hunt for inscriptions (and the occasional meal). Delight at the multitude of variant forms, the calligraphic whimsy, and sculptural skill of a hand full of anonymous artisans who together, across centuries, map a transition from the improvisational joie of Romanesque lettering to the highly ornamental Round Gothic epigraphic style. The book is printed on Mohawk paper using my rendition of Baskerville's Great Primer typeface and embellished with drawings of letters, a seven color map of Padua, and 16 pages of photographic plates. Number 1 in the series Swan and Hoop

A Roman inscription on Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio by Russell Maret( Book )

2 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Take a close look at the magisterial c.1150 inscription on the porch of Santi Giovanni e Paolo al Celio in Rome. Though typically consigned to the dark fringes of Roman lettering, the inscription on Giovanni e Paolo offers a refreshingly non-Imperial articulation of Roman-ness in the lively variety of its 133 letters. The text is set in the first versions of my Texto Portuguez and Lisboa Italic types and printed on Mohawk paper. Embellished with a transcription and translation of the inscription, drawings of letters, a map of Rome, and photographs of every letterform. Number 2 in the series Swan and Hoop

One of the greatest of the classical Greek dramas, based on the Greek legend of the Titan demi-god who, against the will of Zeus, stole fire from the gods for the benefit of man. His terrible punishment by Zeus, and his continuing defiance of Zeus in the face of that punishment, remain universal symbols of man's vulnerability in any struggle with the gods
