"The present work is designed to serve as an introduction to subjects which will repay many years' close and careful study. In so vast a field. it were vain to attempt anything more than an outline of the various subjects. We have aimed at giving such particulars as would be interesting or important to young persons and general readers; and this principle has guided us in the selection of our materials. ... The following pages were originally written some years ago: but they have been carefully revised, with a view to bring every part up to the state of knowledge at the present day."--Preface

In this funding appeal, Vice Regent Fogg asks the Tennessee legislature to make good on its "promise or pledge" of the previous year to make a contribution "for the Home and Grave of Washington, fast crumbling to decay." She suggests a strategy and surmises that their constituents "will cheerfully refund the amount to them." Reminding them that Washington's "sacred ashes repose in SOUTHERN SOIL," she wonders whether contributing this money "may be the last act of patriotic benevolence ever performed by a legislative body on their individual responsibility for the memory of Washington."
