Arming genocide in Rwanda by Stephen D Goose( )

4 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper argues that Rwanda is only the latest example of what can happen when small arms and light weapons are sold to a country plagued by ethnic, religious or nationalist strife: these weapons cause the most death and destruction in local wars and are closely tied to human rights abuse and violations of international law. The analysis of the Rwandan case highlights the responsibility borne by governments that supplied weapons. It emphasizes the need for a viable mechanism for controlling the transfer of conventional arms, and the role of the largest conventional arms exporter, the United States.--SCAD summary

Angola's forgotten war, fueled by a steady supply of weapons to both sides, has claimed an estimated 100, 000 civilian lives since the conflict resumed following the September 1992 elections. The government and the UNITA rebels are responsible for an appalling range of violations of the laws of war. Angolian government forces have engaged in indiscriminate aerial bombardments, torture, disapperance, summary executions, looting, and recruitment of child soldiers

"A former soldier who planted a landmine in Northern Angola in 1965 recently returned to help find it. The mine was operational, still waiting after thirty years to claim a victim. Landmines are inherently indiscriminate weapons recognizing no cease-fire and, long after the fighting has stopped, continue to maim or kill the children and grandchildren of the soldiers who laid them"--Back cover
