9 editions published between 1898 and 2012 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The church historian and Benedictine monk Cuthbert Butler (1858-1934) was known for his expertise on the monastic life and wrote several books on the subject, including Benedictine Monachism (1919) and Western Mysticism (1922). Previously he had produced this two-volume edition of Palladius of Galatia's Lausiac History. Written in the early fifth century, it records the lives of the Egyptian 'Desert Fathers' and is an important source for early monasticism. In Volume 1 (1898), Butler begins with a general introduction to Palladius' work, followed by a critical survey of the various versions of Palladius' text, which survives in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Armenian and Coptic. The volume includes a contribution by Armitage Robinson, later Dean of Westminster, on the Armenian version. The later part of this volume turns to an exploration of Palladius' theology, other related sources for the history of Egyptian monasticism, and a historical discussion of early monasticism

A hundred years of Hymns ancient & modern by W. K. Lowther Clarke( Book )

5 editions published in 1960 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The "battle of the hymn-books" is peculiar to the English Church and some of its branches. The English-speaking Protestant Churches have their own books, in universal use in each of the denominations; so have the Anglican Churches of Ireland, the United States, and Canada. One of our tasks will be to show why no official hymnal has been adopted by the Church of England. Another subject will be the problem of the hymn, what it should be and to what tune it should be set; those who maintain that to be good poetry is the sole criterion are making a mistake. The main purpose of the present book is to take readers behind the scenes and show how a hymn-book is made and what are the difficulties that confront editors. - Introduction
On Christian ethics by Basil( Book )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

St. Basil was a towering figure in the fourth-century Church. In the midst of great controversy, he led the charge of those faithful to the doctrine proclaimed at Nicaea. For the bishop of Caesarea, the array of false teachings that plagued the Church was not merely a matter of conflicting opinions or interpretations. It was rather a result of the moral failure of so-called leaders of the Church to look first to the will of God revealed in Scripture as their compass in all things-in matters of both theology and personal conduct. Here St. Basil lays out a consistent theological ethic, rooted in a nuanced appreciation for the supremacy of Scripture. These texts, presented with the Greek on the facing page, are essential reading for anyone interested in early Christian approaches to ethics as well as the right use and interpretation of the Bible. --
