From Basel : Herzog & de Meuron by Jean-François Chevrier( )

7 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 850 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The global success story of the Basel architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has local roots. This book traces these origins while identifying the essential ideas, professional ethics, and development of their architectural practice, established in 1978.The biographies of both architects and the activities of their practice are intimately bound up with the town of Basel. With this embeddedness in Basel as a point of departure, the authors elucidate central themes of their architectural oeuvre: from habitat to monument. With reference to exemplary buildings, they analyze the motifs, constructive principles, and spatial design of the architectonic works of Herzog & de Meuron. In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and its surroundings: statements by the architects, along with photographs taken especially for this volume by George Dupin, present the locales and buildings that have played key roles for the work of these architects. The book is rounded out by an intensive exchange of ideas between the architects and Jean-François Chevrier

Herzog & de Meuron + Ai Weiwei : Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 by Herzog & de Meuron( Book )

2 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 2008, Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and Chinese artist Ai Weiwei joined forces to design the celebrated Beijing National Stadium for the Olympic Games. In 2012, the team came together again for the Serpentine Gallery's acclaimed annual commission, as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. Their pavilion takes visitors beneath the Serpentine's lawn to explore the hidden history of its previous pavilions. Supporting the structure from below, eleven columns symbolize past pavilions, and a twelfth represents the current one. The pavilion's interior is clad in cork, to evoke the excavated earth, and is built as a network of pathways and trenches. Herzog & de Meuron and Weiwei's archaeological approach creates a space that invites visitors to look beneath the surface of the park as well as back in time to the inspiration of earlier structures.--Provided by publisher

Nairobi, Kenya : migration shaping the city by Shadi Rahbaran( Book )

3 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nairobi, in its short history spanning just over one hundred years, has grown to be one of the most varied and international cities of our contemporary world. Migration has been shown as one of the key forces influencing the city. In the context of Nairobi's complex colonial and post-independence political trajectory, migration has reinforced ethnic, spatial, and economic differences, leading to the formation of multiple power structures. This process is evident in the city's radically different urban patterns. The book documents, along specific neighborhoods, how different cultures of urban life constitute the city today

The inevitable specificity of cities : Napoli, Nile Valley, Belgrade, Nairobi, Hong Kong, Canary Islands, Beirut, Casablanca( Book )

2 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 68 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What is a city? What determines its specifity? What shapes its quality? The evolution of the contemporary city does not follow a linear movement. It is shaped by transformation processes that are directed toward often distant and conflicting goals. Even though cities are inscribed into global processes and networks, they develop their own specific ways of dealing with these conditions. They tend to produce and reproduce their own specificity, their own patterns and character traits. Using the categories of territory, power, and difference - also lending the book its structure - the texts analyze different case studies of cities and urbanized territories, ranging from the Canary Islands to Hong Kong and Nairobi, unfolding the distinctiveness of their physical and social existences
Treacherous transparencies : thoughts and observations triggered by a visit to the Farnsworth House by Jacques Herzog( Book )

8 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 66 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Treacherous Transparencies analyzes transparency as expressed in architecture and art in an attempt to understand the intentions and objectives that underlie its use by pertinent architects and artists. The publication looks at a few important works by selected artists and architects who work with transparency as an artistic strategy, which they implement primarily by using glass and mirrors but other media as well. The architects and artists listed together in this context form an unlikely alliance: Bruno Taut, Ivan Leonidov, Marcel Duchamp, Mies van der Rohe, Dan Graham, and Gerhard Richter. But they do have something in common: their work marks salient way stations in the story of modernism up to the present day
Die Schweiz Ein städtebauliches Portrait : Grenzen, Gemeinden Eine kurze Geschichte des Territoriums by Roger Diener( )

4 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in German and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Herzog & de Meuron Elbphilharmonie by Gerhard Mack( Book )

2 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg's new landmark and is already an icon of contemporary architecture. In this book, Herzog & de Meuron document their project: extensive archive material, plans, and photographs are used to illustrate the process of the creation of this once-in-a-hundred-years building from the first sketch and the various design stages with their many challenges, through to completion of the finished building. The dialog between historical brick plinth and contemporary glass crystal, the combination of different functions, the development of the spectacular large concert hall, the design of a public plaza for the population are just some of the many aspects that contribute to the attractiveness of the building

Trügerische Transparenz Beobachtungen und Reflexionen, angeregt von einem Besuch des Farnsworth House by Jacques Herzog( Book )

2 editions published in 2016 in German and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
