Rubens & Brueghel : a working friendship by Anne T Woollett( Book )

17 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and Dutch and held by 609 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Rubens and Brueghel: A Working Friendship is the first international loan exhibition devoted to the artists' collaborative works and an investigation of their working methods. Assembled here are some of the most important works of Brueghel and Rubens's partnership - from the early war themes, to mythological landscapes and allegories, to iconic paintings of the Madonna and Child surrounded by garlands of fruit and flowers - as well as a select group of works executed with other collaborators, including Hans Rottenhammer, Hendrick de Clerck, Hendrick van Balen, and Frans Snyders. Together, these paintings reveal the nature of collaboration as practiced in the Netherlands in this period. What also emerges is the unique character of Brueghel and Rubens's conceptual alliance - a rare partnership of equals, a complex and reciprocal relationship, that gave rise to works of unparalleled delight."--Jacket
Dutch cityscapes of the Golden Age by Ariane van Suchtelen( Book )

11 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and Swedish and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Dutch society in the seventeenth century was predominantly urban. The political, economic, and military power of the cities exerted a strong influence on national government. The pride people took in the beauty and prosperity of their cities, with architecture both old and new, is reflected in the popularity of the cityscape." "Artists depicted cities in many ways, beginning with the early city profile: a view from some distance of an entire city in silhouette. Such profile views sometimes served as the backdrop to a historical event depicted in the foreground. In the course of the seventeenth century, landscape painters increasingly included distant views of cities in their panoramas, in which the city's picturesque location - often on the banks or a river - played an important role. After 1650 many more artists devoted themselves to the cityscape, exploring the urban space within the town walls in order to pain views of canals, squares, and important buildings."--Jacket

"Rembrandt is an artist who touches people. His pictures testify to deep psychological insight, and his technique is dazzling. This book is about the Rembrandts in the Mauritshuis, the most famous of which is undoubtedly The anatomy lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp. Also very popular, however, are the Portrait of and old man and what is perhaps Rembrandt's very last Self-portrait, painted in 1669, the year of his death. This volume sheds light not only on Rembrandt's masterpieces but also on his eventful life: his obsession with work, his compulsive collecting, his undeniable success and his artistic crises. This, in short, is an overview of Rembrandt, based on one of the most splendid collections of Rembrandts in the world."--Jacket

Jan Steen is famous for his pictoral puns. His humerous paintings of dissolute households, merrymaking peasants outside inns, quacks at village fairs, and lovesick maidens tended by sham doctors are known the world over. Steen was unsurpassed in his ability to poke fun at every conceivable human weakness and vice. His narrative scenes make us laugh, but also teach us lessons. In addition, his large and varied oeuvre contains important history paintings. Steen was both a true storyteller and a gifted painter, whose favourite subject was everyday life. The Mauritshuis owns a sizeable collection of paintings by Jan Steen, including such famous works as The Oyster Eater, The Poultry Yard and As the Old Sing, So Twitter the Young. This book illuminates the beautiful collection of Jan Steens in the Mauritshuis, and also offers a brief overview of the art of this popular master
