Once more than 1 million orangutans lived in the forests that stretched from China to Java. Now only small pockets of jungle support a dwindling population of just 15,000. The continued destruction of their habitat and the black market trade in baby orangutans, threaten to bring our closest primate relative to the brink of extinction. One man making a small difference in this battle for survival is Dr. Willie Smits whose efforts have made him many enemies, but this year Smits will rescue his 1000th orangutan

Disenchanted Forest( Visual )

Focusing on the Wanariset Orangutan Reintroduction Project in Borneo, this documentary follows the work of primate psychologist Anne Russon, of York University, Willie Smits, director of the Project, and Lone Drøscher-Nielsen, another orangutan rehabilitator. Orphaned by deforestation and the exotic pet trade, juvenile orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) face a tenuous reintroduction to the wild. With input from Russon and primatologist Carel van Schaik, of Duke University, Smits and Drøscher-Nielsen teach the juvenile orangutans the skills they need to survive on their own. The researchers provide the social support that the orangutans otherwise lack, promoting interaction between the humans and orangutans, and between individual orangutans. Behaviors observed include feeding, nursing, sleeping, playing, and grooming
Die Denker des Dschungels : [der Orangutan- Report ; Bilder, Fakten, Hintergründe] by Gerd Schuster( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in German and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Orangutans are among our nearest relatives in the animal realm. They are approximately 97 percent genetically identical, highly intelligent, thoughtful and inventive. They have culture and a sense of beauty, and they resemble us in mimicry, gesturing and many other respects. The red apes, which live only on Borneo and Sumatra, are as much "human" as humans and therefore probably too good for this world. They are as strong as bears, but they do not fight against poachers and the bands of men logging for the palm oil concerns -- and are remorselessly slaughtered. This is an uncommon portrait of the orangutan's reality, that goes much farther than simple zoology. Based on the singular personal experiences of Dr. Willie Smits, who probably knows orangutans best in the world, the book reveals the well-established but pitiless reasons for the murder of our shaggy cousins -- and shows where there is nevertheless still hope. -- From the book jacket, translated by the cataloger

7 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in Spanish and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
